My g-g-great grandfather was William (John ?) Browne from Co. Down - possibly the Castlewellan area.  He married Ellen Phelan in 1885 in Dublin, witnessed by a Jacob Browne and Catharina Claxton.

His parents are listed as William and Marie (possibly Mary as it is in Latin) Brown from County Down.  The rumour is that he married in Dubin against his parents wishes and that he converted to do so - hence the missing "e" at the end of his parents names.  There also may be a link to the coastguard but no definite on that.

I need to know what parish Castlewellan comes under and if any other aid can be given that would be great!

  • Thank you very much for the information.  I am only working on family rumours, so any help is appreciated.  Will work round that for now.  Any information regarding William Browne that I had I included in the original message but I cannot confirm any of it yet.

    Thanks again,

    Anna
