Hi,

Are there any volunteers in the Glasnevin area of Dublin, who could check to see whether 2 graves of my ancestors and their families have existing gravestones.

I have obtained the relevant records from the Glasnevin Trust burial database giving me the names of the grave occupants plus their dates & places of death.
However, I was hoping there might be gravestone/memorial inscriptions which might provide additional clues to help me discover more about them and take my family history research further back in time.

The graves are both in Glasnevin Cemetery, and numbered Z7 & St. Patrick's XK170.
Z7 - 7 burials of Murphys & McAllister (1840-1900)
XK170 - 7 burials of Keelers & Murphy (1904-17)

I realise this cemetery is enormous, but any help would be much appreciated.

Nick.

  • I'm in County Dublin, but the other side of the city - I may be visiting the cemetery at some stage... will keep your details in mind.

can you post the full references for each plot - there should be a section for each one - e.g. South, St. Paul's, Garden, St. Brigid's, St Patrick's (may include North or South), in addition to the row, letter(s) and plot number.

  • Hi Shane,

Thanks for your quick response and offer.

The Glasnevin burial register entries I have just show the following for the 2 graves...

    St. Bridget's - Latitude Z, Longitude 7
    St. Patrick's - Latitude XK, Longitude 170

  • Those reference look good to me, should be enough to locate the plots and see if there are are headstones...

Might be a weeks or two before I can arrange a trip, will let you know what I find...

  • I was able to do a quick visit, and located the correct site for the plot in St. Patrick's (XK /  170) - unfortunately no headstone.

I'll visit again soon and have a look for the second grave site and post photos.

  • Thanks for that Shane. It's a shame but not a surprise. Fingers crossed for the other one.

  • Hi - can you double check the details for the Murphys & McAllister plot - "St. Bridget's - Latitude Z, Longitude 7"

The names and dates of burials could also help - having a little trouble locating this one..

  • Hi Shane. Thanks for having another go at this for me.

Sorry for slow reply. We've been out all day without access to the info you requested.

The grave ref on the Glasnevin burial register entries is definitely Latitude Z, Longitude 7. Only the 1900 burial says St. Bridget.

The burials in this plot are...

    Murphy        Thomas       Oct 1840
    Murphy        Teresa         Aug 1841
    Murphy        Mary Ann    Sep 1847
    Murphy        Cecilia         Feb 1850
    McAlister      Maria          Mar 1869
    Fitzgibbon    Frances      Feb 1900

    Fingers crossed.

    Nick
