I am searching for the birth info of my GF Thomas McGrath who immigrated to Toronto, Canada around 1910-1911 and died on April 24,1913 at the age of 24. This puts his birth year about 1889 in Dublin, son Of John and Mary A. I found them in the 1901 census on 25.5 Charles St.,Inns Quay, John is a widower and I believe his wife to be Mary Alice Hayes who died in 1893 probably around the birth of Bridget. Thomas married my GM Kathleen Burke (Kathren Burke on Marriage Record) on Oct 27, 1907 in the RC Church of St Michan. This info I hope will lead me to which John Mcgrath is his father who would have been born about 1869 according to the census. I have a John born Oct 25 1868 50 Mary's lane, another born April 30, 1869 ,baptised at 591 No3 North city and another baptised at St Paul, Arrans Quay in 1869. the RC parish records stop at Jan 1888. Are their more records available? any Assistance would be most appreciated

  • A possible civil birth record for your Thomas McGrath 4th July 1891, parents John McGrath and Mary Anne Farrell, residence 74 Patrick Street, Dublin City. Father occupation Carpenter and informant for the birth was an Anne Kearney.

for ref., the 1907 marriage describes John as a labourer and the grooms address as 25 Charles.., the bride's as 5 Long Lane, witnesses are Patrick Robinson & Katie Kelly - so the groom's address fit's with that 1901 census you mentioned.

I havnt found births for the two sisters to confirm the mother's name so far.. still searching for those..

p.s. marriages uaually took place in the bride's current parish - so the groom may have been born in another part of the city.

  • Shane, Most appreciative of your efforts , however I don't think that the Patrick street lead fits. I found the mentioned John McGrath,Mary Anne and family including a Thomas on the 1901 census on Patrick Street .this John is 48 and my John is 32 in 1901. Also Mary A. had died by that time. Also the Patrick street John is a Carpenter and his son is a carpenter on the 1911 census.   My John was a Drayman in 1901 and and a labourer in 1907 and 1911. My GF Thomas had immigrated to Canada in 1910/11. After he was married they had 2 children in Dublin before they came to Canada. they were Esther Mary McGrath born. Feb 1,1908 and (William) Thomas McGrath born.Mar 21, 1910. which may help a little. Mary Alice Hayes was born on Jun 26 1873 and was baptised at St. Andrews, Westland row. I searched there with no luck either. Her mother was a Cummins and I have a distant DNA match with someone who has the Cummins name in therir tree, although this may be just a coincidence. Hope you can find something! Thanks, Jack Law

  • I think I'm missing some of your clues here... just wondering where the detail re. Thomas' mother being Mary Alice Hayes originates, is that mentioned on a church marriage record, details passed down, or maybe Canadian records ?

Do you have the death or burial record for Mary Alice - the only close match I've seen so far is a Mary McGrath who died in 1893 age 20 at St. Vincents Hospital Dublin South, but she was a spinster, daughter of a labourer.

  • I believe I've found a good match for the death of John McGrath's wife - Mary Anne McGrath, married, died 22nd October 1897 at Chancery St., reported age 32 (c1865) listed as Drayman's wife, informant John McGrath widower, present at death, residence 18 Chancery St. Cause of death appears to be Dropsey. (Chancery Street is next to Charles Street)

  • adding some notes here as I search.... possible leads to follow up on..

Marriage of John McGrath and Mary Anne Delaney, 14th October 1888 - St Michan's,  groom is a labourer age 19, bride is full age, i.e. 21 or over. (could account fr the reported age on the death..)

Birth of an unnamed male Child on the 15th April 1894 at the Rotunda Hospital to John McGrath and Mary Ann Delaney, residence 18 Charles St.

Birth of an unnamed female child on the 7th June 1892 to John McGrath and Mary A. Delaney

  • Hi Shane That is excellent news! Forget Mary Alice I had found the same death notice that you found listing 1873-1893 which seemed to tie in. This is so exciting since I have been stuck on this for a number of years. Mary Anne Delaney fits perfectly. I found her birth on May 7, 1866 and her baptism on May 9 1866 at St.Michan with parents Robert Delaney and Brigid McClean living at the same 18 Charles St. The unnamed female child matches Bridget, the unnamed male child possibly died?  Thomas would have been the first born about 1889 which fits with the marriage of his his parents. Margaret was the next in about 1891 based on the census. the only thing I have on Margaret is a possible but unlikely birth in Dublin south Group Registration 10128664  Would the marriage info for John McGrath include his parents and birthdate? That would be fantastic! It seems likely that my John McGrath may be the one at 50 Mary's Lane. Hoping you can uncover some more info on the birth of Thomas. Keep up the good work! Thanks, Jack

  • Hi Shane The unnamed males 1894 and 1896 must have died by the 1901 census. Is that likely?  I've been looking all over for Thomas with no luck as yet. To fit into the proper scheme of things, he should have been born in the summer of 1889 in Dublin city. I tried looking for an unknown Delaney/Delany and found one that may fit. An unnamed male child born to an unmarried Mary Daul? Aug 21, 1888 at Rotunda Dublin N. what do you think? Are their any Church records available for 1889? If he was illegitimate would he have been baptised in the church?  cheers Jack

  • All children would have been baptised and a child must have a name at that stage, but sometimes births were not civilly registered. Hospitals like the Rotunda bulk registered births, often without knowing the child's name, and I have seen cases there were ommisions or mistakes. The online Catholic records only cover up to about the 1880s, since that was the cut-off for the original films.

I think that in this case there's enough evidence to conclude that this McGrath / Delaney family are your ancestors, and that the birth for your Thomas was possibly not registered...

  • Hi Shane I came to the same conclusion and last night was able to add about 20 Irish ancestors to my family tree in various branches and am back to 1755 with the McGrath line in County Wicklow. Thanks again for your efforts in getting me started by opening a few doors. I will try to get  a baptismal certificate for Thomas directly from St Michans RC Church.    Cheers Jack Law
