Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me in my attempt to break through a genealogical brick wall?

According to my great grandfather's birth certificate, his mother's name was Bridget Quain. I've never been able to find her marriage to Robert Birkett but my great grandad, William, was born in Preston, England, in 1869. The censuses that give any details about birthplace list Bridget as being born in Limerick in about 1840-42.The only other thing I know about her is that she had a female relative called Honora as it was Honnora Quain who registered my great-grandfather's birth.

I've found the baptism of a Bridget Quain on 30 January 1841. She is the daughter of John Quain and Margaret Moloney, who lived in Roachestown (Rochestown?) and were married on 19 Feb 1833. John came from Fedimore (Fedamore?) and Margaret from Rochestown. What sparked my interest in this Bridget is that John appears to have had a sister called Honnora, which means Bridget might have had a sister or cousin with the same name who also emigrated to England.

I wonder if anyone knows the family and if this Bridget stayed in Ireland? It would help me rule her out.

Many thanks

Louise

  • Dear Louise B:

Thank you for your post to the message board.  I'm forwarding this to several members in the Limerick Volunteer community who might be able to help.  Please give them a week or so to reply.

I do see from the Roots Ireland database that there were a number of Quain (also spelled Quane) families in the Limerick area.  If you were to look at Honora Quain and see if you had any information about her parents, that might assist with the research.  There were Quains in Limerick City parishes, Ballybricken, Rochestown and Manister parishes.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Hi Louise I now live in Killmallock but my family originally ( 1839) came from Manister, Croom, Co. Limerick there were several families of Quain's in the Manister/Fedamore area. In the 1800's the Parish of Manister and Fedamore was the same parish. There were several Bridget Quain's and there was a Bridget in every family. If you have any further information please let me know and I will do my best to chase her down. George Quain (georgequain@hotmail.com)
