I have posted previously about this family, but have recently found out new information. I attach a screenshot in an attempt to make things clearer.

On a 1911 census one of my ancestors notes her place of birth is Annadown in 1847. I take this to be Annaghdown. So, far I have not managed to find any trace of these folk in the available records. The little knowledge I do have indicates that they were unlikely to have had money, so they may well not show up anywhere. I understand the last person to be born in Ireland was born in 1849. By 1851 are they are recorded on an English census.

I would appreciate any hints as to records I could search to find them in this area - I have tried the NLI records that exist.

This leads me to the following question - given that they chose to leave, why would they wait so long? My understanding is that this area was very badly affected, and the depopulation statistics horrified me!

Also, I wonder what famine relief projects might have been undertaken in the surrounding area at the time (1845-1850).

Thanking you for taking the time to read.

  • Griffith’s Valuation of Galway was completed in 1856/57.  There were still two Concannons in Annaghdown, in the townland of Carheeny, as follows:

Source   Surname              First Name          Townland            Parish    County

Concannon         John       Carheeny             Annaghdown      Co. Galway

  • Thank you for the information so far.

I very grateful indeed. The information I have is as follows

Mary Concannon (Concanon) Born:1785 Ireland, died 1860 Leicestershire England, mother of

John Concannon Born: 1819 (approx) Ireland, died 1894 Leicestershire, England

    married to

Margaret (Margarat) Skerrett* Born: 1822 Ireland, died 1892 Leicestershire England

    Children

Mary Concannon, Born 1847 Annadown, County Galway, Ireland, died Yorkshire England

Michael (Micheal) Concannon, Born 1849, County Galway, Ireland, died1929  Leicestershire England

This family is recorded on the English census April 1851.

    * At the later registration of a child Margaret Concannon leaves her mark (x) rather than signing her name so the spelling of her maiden name is likely the recorders best guess.

I have almost complete information from England, but have cut it short for brevity.

  • I found a Mary and a Michael in Annaghdown, but the parents' names don't match what you have.  Perhaps they are relatives of your Concannons:
