Hello from the USA!

My great-great grandmother was a Margaret Joynt born about 1842 in Ireland. She emigrated to Philadelphia. She married Richard McFadden also of Ireland, unknown if marriage was in USA or Ireland. My great-grandfather Charles R. McFadden (1870-1951) was born in Philadelphia.

On 10 Feb 1902, Charles R. McFadden served as naturalization sponsor for John J. Joynt born in Ireland 1873.

In May 1906 John's brothers Charles (21) and Thomas (25) Joynt travelled to Philadelphia on a ship named Merion.

Per John's death certificate in Dec 1906, in Philadelphia, his parents were Thomas Joynt ("dead") and Catharine Kelly, both of Ireland.

On 8 Dec 1909 both Charles Joynt born 18 Oct 1885 and Thomas Joynt 18 Dec 1879 were naturalized, both listing their birthplace as "Cunnicare."

Charles had a wife Ellen. He died in 1918, in Philadelphia.

I can find no death information for Thomas Joynt.

My puzzle is: does anyone know the relation between my great-great-grandmother Margaret and the Joynts of Conicare? She was of age to be their aunt, making my great-grandfather Charles R. McFadden a first cousin to the three brothers. I know from DNA that I am somehow related to the Joynts of Conicare.

Thank you for any information that might solve the puzzle.

Kind regards,

Mary

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Likely Margaret was the sister of Thomas Joynt. The townland is Conicar in Ballynakill civil parish in Galway.

Here is the family in 1901  http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Galway/Tynagh/Conicar/1396…  and the census record shows many children including Charles and Thomas who came over in 1906. NOTE: There are currently technical difficulties which prevent you from seeing the census record image. Hopefully the problem will be fixed shortly. The same problem is affecting www.irishgenealogy.ie where you can get images of civil birth, marriage and death for certain years. I can help you further once the problem is corrected.

The baptismal records for Ballynakill RC parish start in April 1839 http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0321   However, the records are not on Roots Ireland. You may want to scroll the register to see if you see the baptismal records for Margaret or possibly John.

I'm sure the marriage occurred in Philadelphia. McFadden is almost exclusively a Donegal surname. One of my great-grandmothers was Catherine McFadden who came from Donegal to Philadelphia around 1870.

One of my colleagues from Co. Louth saw your message and alerted me to a message from five years ago with Joynt connections in Conicar. The Joynt people involved are all born in the 20th century but maybe you will see some names that are familiar. My colleague also pointed out this Joynt website in case you have not seen this site.

  • Terrific! Thank you, Roger. If possible to let me know when the links are working, that would be helpful.

Am pleased to know McFadden is a Donegal name as my mother's family is McGroarty from Inver originally and now Mount Charles.

    Best regards,

    Mary
