Hello trying to get links or information on Martin Mahon born 1801 in Gort died Scotland 1864 married Mary Ann Burke born 1819 died Scotland 1879.  They left for Scotland as a married couple with their children, Owen Mahon born about 1837, Bridget born about 1842 and Mary.  There may have been more children as they have large gaps between them.  (Owen runs through the family so am fairly confident Martins father could be named Owen)   Mary Ann  Burke father is called Matthew Burke.  Thank you very much in advance for any help with this.   I shall be visiting Gort between 28 Sept 2018 to 1st Oct.  kind regards Niki

  • Niki,

You should be able to get both Martin’s parents and confirmation of his wife’s parents from their Scottish death certificates, which normally record that information, together with the parents occupations and whether alive or dead at the time the certificate was issued. Did the family live in Greenock? I see a death there for a Martin Mahon in 1864 GROS ref 564/1 148. Also a Mary Mahon in 1879 GROS ref: 564/1 9. Mary’s maiden name is recorded as Bourke in the indexes, so that looks to be the right lady.

Looking at the 1851 census, I see Martin, aged 50 and son Owen (only) in Greenock. Not sure where Mary and any other children were. You might want to search the census for them. Or perhaps they were back in Ireland?

Likewise you can search for the family in the 1861 & 1871 Scottish censuses too. (In the 1861 indexes, I can see a Mary aged 50, with dau Mary aged 13. Again living in Greenock. That might be your family. You would need to look at the actual census return to decide). You can view each certificate or census return on the Scotlandspeople site for about £1.50 (sterling).

I checked the RC baptisms for Greenock for 1845 - 1855 but didn't see any other children born to this couple in that parish.

  • Hello Elwyn, Thank you so much for your input into my Mahon/Burke quest.  I have in fact downloaded the death certificates of the above, on Martin's certificate there is nothing written in the name of father section for some reason?  I have to assume that they were in Ireland and the son in law (Patrick ??) who was present at death (name on death certificate) didnt know Martin's fathers name when the death certificate was written out, which is frustrating.

I visited the Grave of the Mahon's in Greenock a couple of weeks ago and found 13 people buried in one grave plot according to the Cemetary records.

Martin Mahon 24th April 1864 aged 60 according to his death certificate he had Typhus Fever.  Mary Mahon aged 9 died 18 Aug 1864 (possibly of the same thing?).    Martin Mahon aged 1 3/4 16 Nov 1873,       Margaret Mahon aged 12 on 23rd Sept 1877,       John Mahon aged 1 and 3 months 28 March 1890.     Mary Mahon aged 70 25 July 1907.  Owen Mahon aged 76 in 25 Jan 1913.

I know the family for generations  would have attended  ST. Mary's Catholic Church in Greenock, not sure if they would have any reference to Martin's father (in order to get a first name).

On Griffiths, I went through 654 documents to try to localise Mahons and Burkes together to maybe narrow down - parish, towns etc,  They were Gornadeeve West, Parish of Ballynakill,  Cathermore, Parish of Ardrahan,  Beagh, Bolphaudeen, Carrowgarrif in Parish of Beagh. Sheeaun, Termon. Church Street, Ballyhugh in the Parish of Kilmacduagh.  Doorus, Doorus Demense, Geehy north and south, Knockakilleen, Mountscribe or Moneyscreebagh, Tawnagh west, Kinvarra in Parish of Kinvarradoorus,  Loughcurra north and south, Northampton, Roo Demense, Cahermore, in Kiltartan, Parish of Kinvarradoorus.    Ballyna bucky, Ballynastaig, Lavally, Roevehagh, Pollnagarragh west in Dunkellin, Parish of Kileenavarra.  Srahaunnagort or Thornfield, Killian in the Parish of Ballynakill.

As you can see it has narrowed it down (Mainly West of Gort) but still lots of Parishes to distinguish from.  I have got that Martin's son Owen was born in Mayo about 1837, who married Mary Flatley from Templeboy in Sligo.  But they all ended up migrating to Scotland (famine).

I would just like to get Martin's and Mary Anne's parents name, cant find marriage certificate, so by finding a Parish I may have a chance? this way I hope to trace back as far as I can with them.

I thank you in advance for any information or advice that you have  in regards to the above.

    Kind regards, Niki :-)
