Hi. I am trying to trace back on my Broderick line of the family. My G G Grandfather was Patrick Broderick b.1839 in Galway. He eventually moved to England having signed up for the British Army. His army records indicate that he was born in Loughrea, having initially signed up for the Galway Volunteers in 1857. In 1858 he joined the British Army in the 46th Regiment and was finally transferred to the 107th Regiment of Foot in 1863, where he was based at Chichester Barracks in England. He married a Chichester girl in 1878 and died in 1882 (in Chichester). On Patrick's marriage certificate his father is named as Martin (deceased). Martin is registered as being a stone mason. This is where I hit a brick wall. I have tried various on-line avenues to attempt to confirm that his birth place was indeed Loughrea, but without success, and I cannot seem to locate any further info on-line about Martin, or any other members of the Broderick family. My guess is that to probe any further a personal visit to Galway will be necessary. I plan to attempt this some time next year, all being well, but in the meantime if anyone out there has any information they think may be relevant, or any suggestions for further search sites, I would be much obliged. Thanking you all in anticipation. Al.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I checked on Roots Ireland in the Loughrea records for a Patrick Broderick baptismal record. There was an 1839 record (see below) however the father was Patrick and not Martin. There were no other Patrick Broderick baptismal records in East Galway with a father Martin. I further checked the Loughrea records and the only Broderick baptismal record with a father Martin was a Martin Broderick. They were living in the Workhouse. The mother was shown as Bridget Broderick. Here is the link to the online parish register for Loughrea   http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0336

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Loughrea did not show a Martin Broderick only three Patrick Broderick records.

  • Thank you Roger for your kind help and efforts. This is so frustrating, but I suppose part and parcel when dealing with genealogy. I have double-checked Patrick's military record, and although it is written down that he was born in Voughrea, I have assumed this actually means Loughrea, and was just entered incorrectly. I am assuming there is no actual place called Voughrea.

  • Alan,

I don't know if this will help - hit a brick wall myself with a Patrick, so here goes:

    1. Martin Broderick
sp: Mary Fahy (m.16 May 1828)
    2. Bridget Broderick (b.18 Jun 1829-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)
    2. Anne Broderick (b.8 Sep 1830-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)
    2. Edmond Broderick (b.27 Jun 1832-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)
    2. Michael Broderick (b.21 Sep 1835-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)
    2. Patrick Broderick (b.16 Jul 1837-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)
    2. Catherine Broderick (b.16 Jun 1839-Cahernagarry,Kilreekil,Galway)

The marriage was held in the RC parish of New Inn to the north of Kilrickle; Cathernagarry adjacent to Kilrickle and I have DNA matched in that area and Doon but am unable to make direct links.  My gfather John Broderick married Elizabeth Colleran in 1894 with father Patrick in attendance; they lived in Masonbrook and their are DNA links to the south but again no direct links :-(

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks for that Tony. I will do some further research around that info. See if I can tie in that birth date of Patrick with the Patrick in my tree. Much appreciate your help trying to crack this wall.  Alan.

  • I have some distant Broderick ancestors from Cahernagarry, Bullaun, Loughrea, County Galway but none that go back that far in time so far.  I did search the "Ireland Catholic Parish Registers 1655 - 1915" for baptisms in Clonfert Diocese in Ancestry.com (which would cover Cahernagarry where my ancestors hail from [Monahans & Callanans] and other parts of East Galway) and found a Patt Broderick baptized in Cappataggle with a residence of Cahernagarry 16 July 1837 with parents Martin Broderick and Mary Foley.  This would make this Patrick about 24 years of age and old enough to start a military career.  Since Cahernagarry is a small village and part of the Civil Parish of Loughrea, it wouldn't be far-fetched, to my mind, for your ancestor to self identify as being from Loughrea.

    Good luck,

    Jim Cosgrove

  • Thanks Jim. That ties in nicely with the info from Tony, above. I've got Patrick's British army records, but unfortunately nowhere on them do they give his date of birth, just the year 1839. However, I dare not completely discount the possibility that the 1837 Patrick birthdate could in fact be the correct year. Just need to keep plugging away to try and ascertain the exact month and day of his birth.   Al.

  • Hi Tony,

My great grandparents were John Broderick and Elizabeth Colleran. My grandmother, Helena Broderick married Albert Downes in England.
I really know very little about the Broderick's, past and present. As we a clearly related, it would be great if you have any information/family tree that would be most helpful. I'm so pleased I found your reply in this thread.

I am on Facebook (my picture is a black and white cat).

I, very much, look forward to hearing from you.
