Hello

I am trying to trace some members of the Joynt family from Loughrea.  The branch of the family I am interested in were born in the late 1920' and into the 1930's, and some may well still be living in the Loughrea area.  The only name I have is Agnes Josephine Joynt, born 21 Feb 1934.  I think she has or had a sister called Mary Catherine Joynt but I dont have a dob.  I think there are 4 brothers as well but I have no other information.  I would love to know a bit more about this branch of the family ie parents names and if there are any children.  The family may well have left the area but any information would be greatly appreciated.

If you can help please contact me either on the message board or email eileenphillips@wanadoo.fr

Many thanks

Eileen Phillips

  • Dear Eileen,

You are in luck. There is a member of the Loughrea Joynt family that is knowledgeable about their family genealogy - will make an inquiry and get the lady in mind to respond to you shortly.

    Best..

  • Hi Eileen,

I read with interest your post as my mom (nee Joynt) was born and raised in Church Street, Loughrea in the 40's. My grandmother, Florence Joynt was the librarian in Loughrea for 50 years. Her husband, Jack owned the Brewery Yard on Barrack Street. His brother Bill and family lived on Cross Street, Loughrea. But we are not long in Loughrea. As a teacher my great grand father moved the family to Loughrea from Enniskillen and the family orginally came from Killala, County Mayo.

I asked my mother and none of the names (Agnes Josephine Joynt or Mary Catherine Joynt) are connected with our family. She does not recall any other Joynts living in Loughrea, bar there was a  Joynt "from out the country" working in Murphys on Barrack Street, Loughrea.

Do you know Eileen if they were from the town of Loughrea, or the surrounding area?

I did carried out a 1911 Cenus search with the following results:

    in Conicar (Tynagh, Galway)

Surname    Forename    Age    Sex    Relation to head    Religion
Joynt    Thomas    73    Male    Head of Family    R C
    Joynt    Michael    43    Male    Son    R C
    Joynt    James    42    Male    Son    R C
    Joynt    Richard    30    Male    Son    R C
    Joynt    Patrick    24    Male    Son    R C
    Joynt    Agnes    28    Female    Daughter    R C
    Joynt    Catherine    26    Female    Daughter    R C
Morran    Mary Agens    15    Female    Grand Daughter    R C

    and in Garrynaglogh (Tynagh, Galway)

Surname    Forename    Age    Sex    Relation to head    Religion

Joynt    Martin    72    Male    Head of Family    Roman Catholic
Joynt    Charlotte    72    Female    Wife    Roman Catholic
Donnelly    Mary F    50    Female    Boarder    Roman Catholic

The "Agnes" here might be a family name passed down...whole list of similar names under the 1901 Census. Tynagh is outside Loughrea about 15km away...addresses are often referred to as Tynagh, Loughrea, County Galway

There was a passing of a Patrick Joynt in 2007 referenced on the rip..ie website indicating that they were and possibilty still are Joynt's in the area...as following

The death has occurred of Patrick (Paddy) JOYNT of Rehan, Tynagh, and Conicare, Abbey, Loughrea Galway
Reposing at the Hibernian Funeral Home, Portumna, this Monday evening from 6.30pm. Removal at 8pm to The Church of The Assumption, Abbey. Requiem Mass tomorrow, Tuesday, at 12 noon. Burial after Mass to Tynagh Cemetery.

Date published: Monday, April 02, 2007
Date of death: Sunday, April 01, 2007

and another from the same location

The death has occurred of Thomas (Tommy) JOYNT of Conicare, Abbey, Loughrea, Galway
Reposing at the Conroy residence, Kylemore Abbey this evening, Wednesday, from 5.30pm. Removal at 7.30pm to The Church of the Assumption, Abbey. Mass tomorrow, Thursday, at 12 noon. Funeral afterwards to the adjoining cemetery.

  • Hi Michelle

I am most grateful to you for your reply and for the time and trouble you have taken on this.  Out of interest are you the person that Mike referred to in his posting on this?

I am suprised that with the history of your family in the Loughrea area that no-one knows of this family.  I am working on some information that has been provided by a third party.  The iinformation I have is quite specific and the family definitely came from Loughrea and appear to have had a strong connection with St Brendans church.  Does St Brendans have a wider community than Loughrea?

What I know is that Agnes Josephine Joynt (who incidentally wil be 78 years old today) came from Loughrea and in about 1957 she went to England and worked in London as a waitress in a hotel.  She remained there until about 1962 and I think she went back to her homeland.  1n 1960 her sister Mary was also with her. I dont know how long for.

The priest at St Brendans in about 1960 was a Father M O'Reilly and my information tells me that he knew this family well.

I have studied all the Obituaries you have referred to and there are more but I cannot trace any mention of this family anywhere.

There is more information I have but I would like if possible to contact you privately.  Would you be amenable to this please.

In the meantime, many thanks for your interest in my query and I hope to hear from you shortly.

    Kind regards

    Eileen

  • I have a note regarding  Mausie Joynt who married Thomas Fergus in Loughea. I have a write up about the life of Thomas that mentions Mausie. I can send it to you, if you would like it. Maybe it will contain information useful to you.

  • I have already posted on the Loughrea site, but my recent enquiries have narrowed down my search to the Abbey/Conicar district.

I am looking for a branch of the Joynt family and the information I now have is that Parents were Michael Joynt and Mary Ann Glynn. They had Mary Kate born 1923, Agnes born 1928, Thomas born 1929, Bridget born 1931, Richard born 1933 and John born 1936.

I have seen a reference to a death notice for Thomas Joynt from this area but I dont think it is the same one, so I am assuming there are other Joynt families from this district.

I am not sure which members of the familly are still living, and I dont know if they are still in this area.

If anyone can help me please get in touch.

    Thanks

  • Hello Eileen.

I was re-reading all of the above messages.  I went to the website "FamilySearch.org" and searched the "Ireland, Civil Registration Indexes" and found a possible match for your family:

Marriage:  Michael Joynt, registered Apr-Jun 1923, Portumna

They could have been married a few months earlier, but didn't register until the beginning of April, for example.

Birth: Mary Kate Joynt, registered Jan-Mar 1924, Portumna.  (She might have been born in Nov/Dec of 1923, but they went to register her in Jan 1924?)

Birth: Agnes Joynt, registered Apr-Jun 1928, Portumna, her mother was Glynn.

Brith: Thomas P Joynt, registered Oct-Dec 1929, Portumna, his mother was Glynn.

Birth: Bridget P Joynt, registered Oct-Dec 1931, Portumna, her mother was Glynn.

All of these records can be found on microfilm, either in Dublin's National Archives, if you live in Ireland, or ordered through the LDS church, no matter where you live.  If you'd like, I can email you the information on how to do that, or copy/paste the search results pages and email them to you.

I only have a minute, I have to run to get ready for work, but I wanted you to have this information, as I believe your family was from Portumna, or at least living in that area in the 1920's and early 30's.

    Thanks!
