Hello, I'm looking for the location of the Leonard family of Matthias Leonard born Galway abt.   1844, his father and mother's names were possibly Thomas and Bridget and he had a sister  Katharine who was born around 1859.

Would like to know what part of Galway they were from. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks Peter

  • Peter:

I searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and I did not find any Matthias Leonard baptismal records in Co. Galway with the parents names you suggested. Same with a possible record for Katherine. There are a number of Co. Galway RC parishes which do not have records available around 1844.

If you do not have any other info on the Leonard's, you may want to consider a general DNA test which could provide matches on your Leonard line.

  • Peter,

The first name "Mathias" was possibly used as a gaelic version of "Matthew".

There is a record of a Mathias Leonard in the parish of Moycullen - Knockranny - in the Tithe Records 1828 and another in Griffith's Valuations c1855 in Spiddle.

Griffith's valuation record 13 "Thomas Leonard" in County Galway - 1850's.

You can access those sites for free  - Tithe Records: www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy  - Griffith's records:  www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith's
