Seeking information on Patrick Gorman who married Eliza Sanders at St Pauls, Arran Quay, Dublin in April 1834. They sailed from Liverpool aboard the Medora in June, 1834, arriving in New South Wales, Australia in November 1834. He was listed as an Agricultural Labourer. Patrick and Eliza had 4 children, all born New South Wales - Patrick b.1835; John b.1836; Mary b.1839; Bridget b.1841. Place of origin in Ireland given as Galway on Patrick Snr's death certificate by son-in-law; this has never been confirmed and extensive searches of Galway fail to produce results. Nor is there any information of family for Patrick Snr. I have doubts with the accuracy of Patrick Snr's death certificate as provided by his son-in-law, John Moran. Firstly, he has Patrick as being in Australia for 40 years, yet Patrick emigrated from England in 1834 meaning he was in Australia for 45 years at time of death. John states Patrick was married to Mary Saunders, but he was married to Eliza Sanders and each of the 4 children of Patrick and Eliza state their mother's name is Eliza. He is missing a son from the death certificate - John, who is my gggrandfather. The first born, Patrick Jnr, I have no information at all after his birth except on Patrick Snr's death Patrick Jnr seems to still be living in 1879.

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!
Researching for Ballynakill parish in Co. Galway is difficult because there are four separate Ballynakill civil parishes in the county. I did search the subscription site Roots Ireland and found one baptismal record for Mary Gorman. The baptismal record does not show a townland.

Have you considered DNA testing?

Hello Roger
Apologies for late reply, but not long back from trip to Singapore.
I have placed emigration story on suggested site.
I and my father have had DNA testing with Family Tree DNA. Problem is, try as I will I don't seem to be able to get the results on other sites, eg MyHeritage, where I am sure there may be a better chance of matches. The only match I have had with Family Tree DNA was with a suspected relative who I asked to do her DNA to confirm our relationship - it did.
All Patrick's and Eliza's children were born in Australia. A brother, John, emigrated 1856, parents named as James & Mary (no maiden name) with wife, Judy and children. John was born c.1817; Patrick was born c.1797, so there is every possibility that there are more siblings to these brothers. It would appear that Patrick sponsored John and his family to Australia. Children to John and Judy (nee Murphy) were Mary, Anne & Bridget, all born Ireland and would presume the Mary Gorman birth you have provided could well be the same as Mary who emigrated (although her age on shipping record of 1856 is given as 11 years).
Thank you for your assistance.
Regards
Jilly

Try adding your DNA data to the volunteer run site called Genesis Gedmatch www.genesis.gedmatch.com You will get macthes with people who tested with other companies and also loaded their data to Genesis Gedmatch.
