My great grandparents Thomas and Teresa (Grealis) Hannon last appeared in the  1911 census for Portumna, Galway. They were married in Loughrea in 1872. Can you help me locate where they are buried?

  • Hi Michael,

the information in the 1911 census is that they were resident of a house 39 in Old Street (Portumna, Galway). Thomas was bricklayer and his wife a housekeeper and they had four sons.

I'm posting your message here as someone may see it and be able to help. I also suggest you get in contact with the Hannon Clan - http://clanhannon.com/hannon.html

Deaths records for the time after 1911 are available from http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

Deaths registered in the island of Ireland between 1st January, 1864 and 31st December, 1921 inclusive and in Ireland (excluding Northern Ireland ) from 1922 onwards.

Irish birth, death and marriages civil registration indexes 1864-1958 can also be found here: http://www.familysearch.org/.

I am trying to find information on Ernest and Georgina Hardy. The were in their 20/30s in the 1901 Irish census and lived in Cranna in Tynagh, Portumna. They then had an address after 1920's at Seacliff Road in Bangor Co Down. I have letters from Georgina in the 1920's to William Cormican  (my grandfather) who also lived at Cranna.  Any information would be appreciated as to who they were and if they had any children whom I could pass the letters on to.Many thanksMary.

  • Hi Dolores,

Thanks for the recommended links to research my great grandparents Thomas and Teresa (Grealis) Hannon.

I mis-spoke when I stated they were last listed in the 1911 census, it was actually the 1901 census. The familysearch site revealed a death registration in Portumna for Thomas Hannon in the  Apr-Jun quarter, 1904. This corresponds with information I have that my grandmother Mary (Hannon) Allen, the daughte of Thomas and Teresa,  traveled from Brooklyn, New York to Portumna in July 1904 and brought  her young brothers Thomas, John, and Roderick back to New York  in September 1904. .

There are still some unaswered questions. On what date did Thomas die and where was he buried? I could find no registration of the death of his wife Teresa Hannon, but it most likely occurred after the 1901 census and before July 1904.

I would love to travel to Portumna this summer when Ireland Reaches Out has its "Week of Welcomes."  What town will host this event and would I have the opportunity to research the Hannons in Portumna?

    My best,

    Michael Allen
