Hi, I am researching my Gr Grandfather Patrick Starkey family in Ireland (immigrated to Vermont in 1883).  Information I found from rootsireland is Patrick was born Mar 9, 1851 in Rahoon to Peter Starkey and Cath Clogherty (married Oct 9, 1845).  I am trying to find birth information on Peter Starkey.  The marriage record had the witness as Peter so thought this might be his father.  Is there any other place this information might be available?

Thanks for your help.

    I didn’t find any information about Peter Starkey’s birth. But I thought you might be interested in the following…

    When Peter and Catherine’s first child, Peter, was born on 22 Jul 1846, he was born in the poorhouse.  This would have been during the Famine.  See Microfilm of Parish Register: https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634201#page/19/mode/1up

    Peter and Catherine Starkey had at least three other children as per rootsireland:

                   Starkey  Patrick Francis    1851      Co. Galway (as you mentioned)

                   Starkey  Mary      1854      Co. Galway

                   Starkey  John       1857      Co. Galway

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

     In Griffith’s Valuation of Galway in 1856-57, there was only one head of household named Starkey:

                   Starkey  Thomas    T/galway/shop St.         St. Nicholas         Co. Galway

  • Mary,

    To add to the Post by Patricia, the following found on Subscription site www.findmypast.ie

    1. Death record of a Peter Starkie at Market Street, Galway on October 20th 1876 aged 5 years. Death reported by Mary Starkie;

    2. Oughterard Petty Sessions - April 1857 - Peter Starkey charged with knocking a fence in Rosmuc by a neighbour. Case dismissed;

    3. Galway Workhouse - Death of a Peter Starkey, 69 years, married - Smith (Blacksmith) on January 18th 1895- Heart failure. His address: Abbeygate Street.

    Each Workhouse or what were commonly referred to a "The Poor House" had a medical facility.

  • Mary,

    Attached detail of Kate Starkie in Bowling Green, Galway which connects with Market Street.

    It appears that Kate Starkie is the same person as Catherine Starkey.

    Bowling Green is associated with Nora Barnicle wife of the writer - James Joyce.

  • Mary,

    You have an interesting family background on the "Starkey" side. Apparently two "Peters" served in the British Army. Records attached. The first Peter was born in Loughrea c23 miles East of Galway city.

    The second Peter was born in Galway. He gave his age as being born in 1829 and 1831. His service Number was 2482.

    The surname "Starkey" is shown in Dr Edward MacLysaght's book on "Surnames of Ireland" as follows:

    "This well-known Dublin name (of English adjectival origin meaning stiff) is in Ireland since the fourteenth century."

    Two of the children of Peter Starkey and Catherine Clogherty were baptised in Kilcummin - Oughterard.

  • All, thanks for the quick response and all the details.  Thought I would share my thoughts/findings on the information provided.

    Catherine/Kate Starkey - The census record is a good lead.  Her son Patrick's wife Mary Devany (sp? muti version of this name) lived on Bowling Green when they were married in 1875, but they did immigrate to the US in 1883. I will try to review some of the other members in the dwelling to see if they are related to Mary  There is a ~7 years age disconnect between the census and the birth record so both documents might not be related to the same person, but I have developed a healthy skeptism to self reported ages.

    Peter Starkey

    • The death record is promising for the father of Patrick.  Based on his marriage record Patrick was a blacksmith and lived on Abbeygate St. (not sure if this is the Poor House" address).
    • The military records are interesting and probably related to Patrick, but not sure if this is his father.
      • 1831 Birth year - the time in the military is 1848 - 1858 with 6 years oversees.  This overlaps with the birth of his children in Ireland.  Plus the birth year is ~5 year.
      • 1829 Birth year - Colonial Convict Service to Australia.  Not sure if this means he went to Australia or this was just an application.

    Thanks for the help

  • Mary,

    The Galway Workhouse was in the area now occupied by the General or University Hospital on Newcastle Road.

    In regard to Peter and Catherine in Oughterard, their address was the townlands of Farravaun and Gortawulla - not Rosmuc. The area is commonly known as "Glann". It is possible that Catherine had relatives there.

    A Thomas Starkey married a Bridget Conneely in 1825. They had  daughter - Jane - who married a John Murphy in 1861. A son - Joseph was born in 1846. Address - Middle Street. They may be the parents of Peter Starkey who was born in 1829/31?
