Culbert/O'Neill families

Do you have any additional information about what partt of County Kildare they originate from?

Try checking the 1901/1911 census to find out how many Culbert/O'Neill families were living in the area at that time. You can check this here: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Have you tried checking the Ellis Island records (www.ellisisland.org) or the Castle Garden records (www.castlegarden.org)? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information, and perhaps even find out an exact place of origin.

The UK National Archives is probably the best place to find out information about their life in the UK during that period. Do you other details, such as an occupation?

Civil registration records are available from the General Register Office (GRO). These start from 1864 however. You can access the website here: http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm

I am studying the Culberts worldwide, and have a little bit of info. on the family you seek.  I don't know who Patrick Culbert's or Martha O'Neill's parents were.  Nor do I have any information about them migrating to the USA.  I have fairly good information about the Culberts living in the USA, and there is no one in my database who is likely to be him.  I'm sorry, but it appears researching them in the USA is going to be difficult without more information.

There was a Mary Anne Culbert b. 1843 in Co. Kildare.  There was also a Patrick Culbert who lived in Monasterevin Parish, Co. Kildare, and who was born before 1836.  Maura O'Grady gave me this last info. in Sep 2011, maurogrady at yahoo.ie  Maybe she can help.

In my database, I have no Culberts for any earlier generation than Patrick in County Kildare.

I was bothered that I had no Patrick Culbert in my database that might match yours, who supposedly emigrated from ireland to the U.S.A. in 1893.  So I went to the 1900 U.S. Federal Census, NARA Microfilm Publication T623 (FHL microfilm 1241505) at FamilySearch and I found a likely family:

- John M Hazel, head, age 41, born Jan 1859, Delaware, Machinist

- Margaret Hazel, wife, age 23, born Nov 1877, England, immigrated 1894, married 1 year

- Ruth Hazel, daughter, age 8 mos., born Sep 1899, New York

- Patrick Culbert, father-in-law, age 59, born Ireland, widowed, immigrated 1894, alien, no occupation

I found them by searching the Ellis Island website.

Patk. Culbert, age 40[sic], arrived 13 Mar 1893 with Martha and Margaret on the ship City of Berlin, departing from Liverpool, England.  You can see the passenger manifest and a picture of the ship there as well.
