Hello,

Are there any Butler descendants here, who have roots in or near Ballybeigh?

There is a Catherine (Kitty) Phelan and John Butler who were having children around the 1820's and 1830's.  I may (or may not!) be related to them.  They had a son Patrick b 1829.  My ancestor Patrick Butler gave a birth date of 1834, but also had parents John Butler and Catherine Whelan (are Whelan and Phelan interchangeable???).

So the birth date isn't a match - but then again my ancestor married a girl here in Australia who was only 17 in 1864 so perhaps he modified his age somewhat....!

Finally - there is a convict Patrick Butler who was born Kilkenny in about 1830 and was sent to Tasmania after sheep stealing in 1848 (ship arrived in Tasmania August 1849).  He may be the Ballybeigh Patrick Butler or may not be.  Does anyone know if there are sources for Kilkenny court records?  Newspapers have come up blank.

Long shot but worth an ask!

Sally - Melbourne, Australia.

  • Sally,

I have Phelans and Whelans in my family.  Phelan and Whelan are the same name--I've found records for the same family using these two names. In the Irish language, Phelan and Whelan translate into O'Faolain.

  • Thank you Patricia - it is good to know how interchangeable those names are!  One less obstacle to linking my family to the Butlers in Ballybeigh!  :-)

Church Baptisms to John Butler (plus variants) & Catherine Phelan
Action    Source    Surname    First Name    Year    County

    Butler    Bridget    1820    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Laurence    1822    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Martin    1825    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Patrick    1829    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Michael    1831    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Catherine    1834    Co. Kilkenny
    Butler    Mary    1838    Co. Kilkenny

Note the first child is born in Ballingarry, Tipperary.

There are lots of BUTLERS in this part of Kilkenny but this family is the only one that comes up in a search with these parents' s names.

With the exception of the first child baptised in Commons, Ballingarry (just over the county border) the rest are born in Ballybeagh.

There is a John PHELAN in Ballybeagh in 1849 (Griffith's Valuation), possibly related to Catherine. And there are 5 different BUTLER households in various townlands in the civil parish of Tullaroan and 2 other PHELANs that would be worth researching further. Use the names of the sponsors on the children's baptisms as further clues as there are a few more BUTLERs appearing there.
