Hi there,

I am hoping that at some point a distant relative of his siblings might see this message. I contacted a distant relative through this website 10 years after the person who posted the original message so I know anything is possible.

Originally born in the Cobh area of Cork to Daniel and Jane Brophy, he lived in Nore Terrace in Kilkenny by the time he was about 18-20 years old. He was an Ex British Army man and also joined the National Army in 1922. Some of his siblings were Mary Jane, Daniel, Johanna, John and Elizabeth. They reside in the Cobh area on the 1901 and 1911 census. I presume some decendants, if there are some, still live in Ireland like myself.

Brian James Brophy's grandparents where James and Kate Brophy of Mogeely Co. Cork and his uncle Philip Brophy died on board HMS Seagull in September 1918 as a Leading Stoker aged 44 years with no children and unmarried. I found out this info through a Royal Navy Will my grandfather had.

  • Wow,

Eileen thanks for the information on Johanna I never knew anything about her death and husband. Brian James and all his siblings moved to Nore Terrace in Kilkenny and then  afterwards they all disappear except Johanna who went by Molly so I was told. I reckon many of their decendants still live in Kilkenny if they had children.

I have lots of old documents on Daniel from my grandfather, I went to Spike Island with them to show them, they are quite rare and show that he demobilised in 1913 just one year before the war and served 8 years and 312 days abroad between 1887 and 1913.

The census as you said told me his wife Jane was born in modern day Belagavi, Karnataka state in India which is crazy, never knew that but I don't know her name before marriage. Her family must have been soldiers too I reckon.

This will from Daniel's brother Philip helped me out a lot. It appears that Mary Jane either left the household after turning 18 or died as she doesn't get a mention on this document.

  • https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… I came across this death cert for a Jane Brophy died 23/4/1932 age 59 years, she is listed as a widow of an ex soldier from Maudlin Street, Kilkenny. The address of Nore Terrace is off Maudlin Street so I wonder if there is a connection ? I have come across other Brophy's in records with a Maudlin street address, I am beginning to think they are possible relatives.

Another death of interest Mary Brophy whose son John Brophy of Woolfe Tone Street provided details for the registration, she is listed as the wife of a blacksmith. Perhaps a connection can be established with more information.

Given that I know for a fact that Daniel was born in November 1867, his death at 49 in 1916 in Kilkenny adds up. At the time of his brothers will it is Jane who gets the money and not him, supporting the theory that he is indeed dead by then. So this is most likely him

  • As for the connection between the ex soldier listed on Maudlin Street, it surely must be him also, the chance of it being purely a coincidence is impossible. Thank you for that info.

Also there is an old graveyard off Maudlin Street that I never thought of looking in, chances are they might be buried there.
