I have discovered that my GG Grandfather sailed from Ireland to India in 1836 having joined a regiment in the East India Company Army. His age was given as 20 so was born around 1816. The records also show that he was from Portarlington in County Lea. His fathers name was also William Henry. Whilst in The Madras area of India he married a lady called Mathilda but have no further details. William then married a girl called Mary Ann Finnerty in 1859; I have no details re the death of his first wife. I would like to find out more about William’s family in Portarlington

  • Bill: I assume William Henry was Roman Catholic. The RC baptismal records for Portarlington RC parish start in 1820 https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0724 I searched two subscription data bases and did not locate a baptismal record for a William Henry with father William so likely there is no available baptismal record. • Hi Roger Thank you for your reply. William was a RC according to his records in the EIC plus his 2 marriages in India were both Catholic Ceremonies. I will have to research to see how else I can find any trace of him in the Portarlington area.
