My great grand father Patrick Gill left Ireland in 1877 to come to New Zealand with two cousins Patrick and Catherine Gill. I had believed that the other Patrick and Katherine were brother and sister, children of James Gill and Bridget Murray, also of Curraghmartin. However when I recently searched on Roots Ireland I can’t find a child Patrick of James and Bridget. Is that common?

I ask because with my own Great grandfather, Patrick, I had understood that he too had a sister Catherine, and she is mentioned in a Lowell, Mass. obituary for their brother Thomas in 1914 as still living In Ireland yet on Roots Ireland she does not appear.

It is possible that the other Patrick and Catherine who came with my Patrick were also cousins to each other as well as to my Patrick and the story has got a bit muddled.

Any thoughts?

I note on your website that my cousin Steve, of Christchurch NZ, yet another branch of the family, was in touch in 2019 trying to contact any descendants of the family still in Ireland. The 1914 obituary had one brother, James, still living in Ireland. Is there anyway of linking that James to the present day descendants? Steve did visit Drumsna but wasn’t able to make contact.

I hope you may be able to give me some advice and guidance.

  • Ancestry lists births and/or baptisms as late as 1875 for children of James Gill and Bridget Murray in Jamestown, Leitrim.  The names are Eliza, Francis, Andrew, Teresa, Ann, and Bridget.  There is no Catherine or Patrick—are you sure you have the right parents for them?

    Here’s the record for Eliza.

  • Hello, I looked at the MA death record (1914) for Thomas Gill.  It says his parents were Francis Gill and Bridget Doherty.

I then went to RootsIreland and found many children for this couple, including a Patrick.  Could this be your ancestor?

    PATRICK GILL

     Baptism:       09-Jul-1858

    Address:        Curamartin

Parish:           ANNADUFF ROMAN CATHOLIC, Co. Leitrim

    Father:           Francis Gill

    Mother:         Bridget Doherty

    I hope this helps.

  • Thanks. Yes that Thomas is my Patrick's brother. The person missing from Roots is a possible sister, Catherine, mentioned in Thomas's  death notice.

  • In respect of Catherine Gill who I believed to be the daughter of James Gill and Bridget Murray, and sister of the other Patrick (White Pat), I have just received her NZ marriage certificate and it confirms her parents as being James Gill and Bridget Murray. So it seems her Irish records have been lost, along with her brother Patrick. Is that possible/likely ?

  • I have now found Catherine Gill, sister of my GGF Patrick Gill. The entry on Roots Ireland has that Catherine's parents as James Gill and Bridget Doherty. Either it's a transcription error or a signal of a vast scandal . I'm satisfied that it is she who is mentioned in the 1914 Lowell obituary for their brother Thomas.

Another sibling who remained in Ireland is James Gill, born 1868. I think  have found him in House 2 Curraghmartin (Drumsna, Leitrim) in the 1901 Census, with his father Francis and mother Bridget and his sister Jane. His age is 26 but that's wrong he was 33, and Jane is 22 and thats wrong. Might the the census enumerators have been a bit loose?

I can't find a marriage nor a death. He was alive in 1914 in Thomas' obituary.

    Any suggestions ?

I have attached an image of the Gill family tree.

    John Gill was from Curraghmartin.

So I am guessing you are in the same family.

  • Peter,

Yes Thomas at the top of the chart is a brother of Francis Gill who is father of Patrick Gill, my GG Grandfather.

I didn't know of John Joseph. In my work 30 years ago. I must have cut off too early and didn't find the younger siblings. So thanks

Two brothers of that Thomas, James known as Pro and William also came to NZ . no one here in NZ knows why he was called Pro. Any clues? @1860?

I can't find the Michael you mentioned, but did find a younger one with a DNA connection, about aged 18. Can you connect us, john.gillnz@gmail.com ?
