  • Dear May

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you!

I have had a quick look on www.rootsireland.ie and there is a record for a John (possibly the one you mention?), baptised in 1851 in Co. Leitrim to a father Patrick Clarke and mother Bridget Rooney. I can?t see any baptism records for other children or a marriage record for the parents. It may be the case that they married in a parish and at a time that predates the parish records. Baptism records for Cloonclare begin in 1841 while marriages are not recorded until 1850.

I see that there are 5 entries for Patrick Clarke on Griffith?s Valuation (1847-1864), but it would be difficult to say for sure, which, if any are your ancestor:

  • Hi May,

My wife's g grandmother was Isabella Clarke, the younger daughter of Patrick and Bridget b.1853 in Leitrim. The older daughter was Mary Ann Josephine b. circa 1847. I haven't been able to find any indication of Patrick coming to NZ either. He certainly wasn't on the same ship. I have some info on Isabella's family but not much.

    Regards,

  • Hello David

Found your entry and noticed you mentioned the name of Patrick Clarke. For years I have searched for the parents of my Grandfather Patrick Clarke. Patrick was sent from Wellington New Zealand  to an orphange in Nelson NZ in 1882 at the age of 8-9 years of age. Family stories handed down say that Patrick was born in Ireland. It was said that Patrick's father was also named Patrick and his mother Elizabeth Clarke. I have searched  Shipping lists for the family coming into New Zealand, to no avail.

Following all references to any mention of the name Patrick Clarke with the hope of finding Patrick's parents and further family.

  • Hi Marion,

I don't think my Patrick Clarke is of the same family as yours. He was born c.1830. and married to Bridget Rooney. Of his children that I know about the only male was John born c.1851 in Ireland. He married Mary McCarthy. However I suppose it is possible that there was another son who could be your ggrandfather. John may have have a son Patrick but he was not born till about 1880. John lived in Greymouth and was a bootmaker. Sorry I can't be of more help. I know how frustrating it can be trying to trace emmigrants from Ireland.

  • Hi David,  I have just seen your post. Isabella Clarke is also my great grandmother. Her daughter, Ida Mary Clarke is my grandmother. Ida was an illegitimate child born after Isabella's first husband  Frank Fowles died.   May Redmond and I have been in touch in fact she lives about 15 minutes down the road from me. I have info on Mary Anne Clarke and brother John James Clarke. Also quite a bit on Isabella and Ida who both lead very colorful loves.  Im still spending time trying to find Patrick and also one other daughter. Happy to share thru some other way.
