Hi,

i'll be visititing Ireland in September and I would love to walk in my ancester's footsteps.

I'm looking for info on my great-great grandparents John Glancy & Catherine "Kate" O'Gara married in Carrick-on-Shannon, Kiltopghert RC Parish on June 29, 1879.   John & Kate emigrated to Albany, NY in the mid 1880s where the spelling changed to Clancy.  Per their marriage records John's father was Peter, Kate's Farrell. Their US death certificates list John's mother as Bridget McDermott, Kate's Delia Rogers, her father Farran. I've not been able to find anything in Irish records on John & Kate's parents.

Kiltoghert/Jamestown civil and/or parish records contain the birth in of three sons of John & Kate.  Peter born May 16, 1880, baptized May 21.  Patrick born September 24, 1881, baptized September 25.  Michael baptized August 23, 1885.  Peter’s US World War I draft registration has the same date of birth.  Patrick died in 1912 in Albany, prior to WWI.  Michael’s WWI draft registration lists August 6, 1885 as his date of birth.  Five children were born in the US.  Another two unknown children were born, possibly in Ireland.

John Glancy had at least two brothers that resided in Albany NY,  Patrick, born about 1845 and Peter, born about 1866.  I found no Irish records for Patrick.  Of note, I did find birth and baptism records in County Roscommon for a Peter Glanchy, son of Peter Glanchy & Brigid McDermott.  Per Aughrim civil district records Peter was born to Peter , a farmer, and Brigid of Corballywest on February 15, 1867.  Elphin Parish records have a Peter born to Peter & Brigid of Corbally on February 9, 1867 and baptized on February 13.

PS John Glancy was a shoemaker on arrival in the US, soon with his own shop, leading me to wonder if this his trade in Ireland.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Patrick's 1881 civil birth record showed the family lived in the town of Carrick on Shannon so you need to visit the town. I checked the 1901 census for Carrick on Shannon and located two Glancy families. Not sure how they connect to your ancestors. I note that the second record showed a Timothy Glancy (age 20) who was a shoemaker.

Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great trip!

  • Thanks Roger.

I plan on visiting Carrick-on-Shannon and the nearby Corbally area.

Are there local or trade directories from the 1800s?

  • Dave:

There could be directories. Your best bet is to message the Co. Leitrim library.

  • Thanks Gerldine.

Yes we're back.  Loved the visit.

I did speak to a Carrick Glancy.  He did not recognize my branch.  He said there are many in Roscommon which I knew and suspected is where we come from.  He once took a searcher to 10 or so families.  None knew of the visitors relations and most did not know there relationship, if any to each other.

I did connect enough dots and figure out the Griffith maps to find the area where my great-great-grandparents Peter Glancy & Brigid McDermot lived.  We visited the area and spoke with a couple of farmers.  The knew the farm but any relations were long gone. They didn't think there were even ruins left.   They gave me the name of someone to talk to in a nearby village, but we could not find her.  I'm writting the Parish Priest to see if he knows her or can put me in contact with others who might.

I also got a lead on some Ogara' which I'll have to track down long distances.

  • Hello again

Looking at an old map from 1850's - there was a John Clancy in business in Carrick on Shannon on Upper Main Street.

It does not say what his profession was.  The business is now occupied by Priors Newsagent.

    (Sorry just saw this today)
