I am trying to trace a James Rooney, born in the 1780s in Glenaniff, Rossinver Co Leitrim, a tailor by profession - and his son Dennis Rooney, born 1819 in Glenaniff, who emigrated to England in the 1840s and was a cork-cutter by profession. My mother, Patricia Rooney, was the great-granddaughter of Dennis Rooney, who settled in Maidstone, Kent.

I would be extremely grateful for any information you can give me.

Many thanks,

Richard Masefield

  • Dear Richard

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

One of the issues with your search is that records for the RC parish of Rossinver do not begin until 1851. This means that for anyone baptised or married in that parish before that time, there will be no parish record of the event (baptism/marriage/death). As civil registration of births, deaths and marriages does not begin until 1864, there will be no state record of the birth of either James or his son Dennis.

However there is a John Rooney listed in Slater's Directory 1846. John is listed in the town of Manorhamilton and that is about 10k away from Rossinver.

A possible, though tenuous connection, I'm afraid.

  • Richard/Clare:

The 1833 Tithe Applotment listings for Rossinver parish show 32 Rooney records (see below) which could include a few duplicates. Don't see any records in Glenaniff. There is one James but likely not your James unless he was a combined tailor/farmer. The townland is shown as Strahanglass.

  • Many thanks for all helpful suggestions. I guess I'm looking for a needle, or a couple of needles, in a haystack. But certainly woth a try!

  • Dear Richard,

I'm hoping you'll see this all these years later- I think there's a small chance you're talking about my great-great-great grandfather Dennis Rooney who also settled in Maidstone.  His son was Aaron who went on to have 12 children with Charlotte Susannah Wills. I've been trying to track down his birth record to find his father as we have not been able to trace that far back! May I ask what your mother's parents were called?

    best,

    Kit Rooney
