The townland of Camas is spelt with one s in the Griffith Valluation, but I note that it is commonly spelt Camass in current publications. What is the generally accepted spelling?

    Des,

Either spelling appears to be used nowadays.

Camas is the validated place name of the townland according to “The Place names Database of Ireland” at http://www.logainm.ie .

Direct link to Camas is here- http://www.logainm.ie/31844.aspx.

The Camass spelling version is just as old. The Bevan family (formly Beevin) had a large estate of land with house here. In a description taken from “The Landed Estates Database” Nui Galway,

“Burke's ''Irish Family Records'' states that Thomas Beevin leased the lands of Camass, county Limerick, from Sir Standish Hartstonge Baronet in 1703 and it is obvious from the Ordnance Survey Name Books that the Bevans held Camas from the Earl of Limerick in the 1840s.”

In a death notice printed in the Limerick Chronicle (Newpaper) 24/06/1862, it mentions “..late Michael Bevan of Camass, Bruff….”.
