My Maternal Great Great Grandfather, John Fraser, married Mary Fraher in Yackandandah, Victoria, Australia in February 1864. It is not known how and when they emigrated but Australian records disclose that John Fraser detailed his birthplaces as Knocklong and Galbally, whilst Mary Fraher disclosed birth place as Kilfinane. I am unable to find any records of how, why and when they arrived in Australia. I cannot find any Irish records of John Fraser but I have found that Mary Fraser was a daughter of the marriage between Edmund Fraher and Ellen Cleary. Mary was one of six children [Ellen, Mary, Gilbert, Eliza, Brigida and Anna] and they were all baptised in Kilfinane during the period 1836 - 1857 inc. I beleive that the Frahers were farmers.

I'm hoping that someone from the XO community may be able to provide some input into the Irish background of these ancestors.

If anyone can help, my personal e.mail is the preferred method of any contact [brown_747@hotmail.com]

Thanks for reading my post!

Do you have an approximate year of birth for John Fraser? I ask because there is a August 24 1843 baptismal record in the Knocklong RC church for a John Frazer with father John Frazer and mother Alice Martin. This John would have been 20 when if he married in February 1864.

    many thanks for your response.

i do have information about john fraser from australian records found, but there are a lot of inconsistencies.

when john and mary married in feb1864, he declared his age as 22yo which would indictae a birth timing of 1841/2 [of interest, mary's age was declared as 23yo which suggests a birth timing of 1840/1].

i have doubts about age given for mary as i have her baptismal record of march 1838 and as you can see below, further doubts of the married couple [added to that, mary actually gave her family name as "fisher" and not fraher on the marriage register which i think, maybe because she couldn't get the colonial registrar to understand her irish brogue!]. further research of australian records disclosed family name as fraher.

so, john and mary went on to have eight children and birth record details of his age given, vary but gives a reasonable understanding of the period:-

    child 1 - born 7/5/1865 with john's age 27yo which indicates birth timing 1837/38

    child 2 - born 28/1/1867 with john's age 28yo which indicates birth timing 1838/39

    child 3 - born 24/18/1868 with john's age 30yo which indicates birth timing 1837/38

    child 4 - born19/10/1870 with john's age 31yo which indicates birth timing 1838/39

    child 5 - born 12/10/1872 with john's age 33yo which indicates birth timing 1838/39

    child 6 - born 26/1/1875 with john's age 34yo which indicates birth timing 1840/41

    child 7 - born 29/9/1877 with john's age 36yo which indicates birth timing 1840/41

    child 8 - born 30/4/1879 with john's age 38yo which indicates birth timing 1840/41

on the marriage certificate for john and mary, his parents were declared as john fraser and johanna fraser[ nee ryan] and they were farmers.

    thanks again.

  • Gilbert:

I searched on Roots Ireland for all of Ireland and did not find any baptismal records for Fraser children where the father is John and the mother has a surname of Ryan.

  • Hi Gilbert,

the Fraher family in Kilfinane was quite large and most resided in Kilfinane for years. I know Mary’s brother Gilbert Fraher had 5 children of which one was John. John had 9 children one named Patrick who married my granddads sister Bridget OSullivan. I have a decent size family tree which covers a lot of the Fraher family.

let me know if this makes any sense to you.

  • hi mandy.

many thanks for your comment and yes, it does make sense.

really great to read that there is a connection to my family line.

i would love to be able to have a look at your family tree if you are okay with that [it will give me a chance to compare my findings with yours].

is it a personal document or are you using one of the subscription research and family tree sites?

if it is a personal document, perhaps you may care to let me have a look at it by way of my personal e.mail address which is - brown_747@hotmail.com.

or if a subscription family tree site, then parhaps you may care to allow me access?

i look foreward to hearing from you and if there are any other fraser/fraher connection readers who read tis thread then i would like to hear from them too, if they have info to share!!!

    kind regards
