Hello Roger,

John and James were sons of Elizabeth Cumiskey, Cummiskey or  Comiskey and Fred W Patten . James was born on the 19th July 1911 in Boston, Massachusetts, United States and John was born on the 18th of May 1918. Their mother Lizzie died on the 4th January 1919 in Newport, Sullivan, New Hampshire, United States of the Spanish Flu. Apparently as the documentation (US Passport Records) goes their Father was incapable of providing for his children. Arrangements were made by their Aunts Annie Cumiskey and Teresa Cumiskey Redden to send them to Ireland to live with their Grandparents. The Grandparents were James Cumiskey and Eliza Clyne Cumiskey who lived at house number 2 in Currycreaghan, Doory, Longford, and the PLU would be Ballymahon. They sailed from New York to Liverpool arriving on the 29th of July 1919 accompanied by their maternal Aunt Annie.  They may have taken the Ferry from Liverpool to Dublin and  land transportation to Currycreaghan.  John is alleged to have lived with his Grandparents but not so James. James may have lived with one or more relatives in the area. In conversations with John’s son he mentions a Mr. Peter Doherty whom befriended James while he was living with one of the unknown relatives. Mr. Doherty had some affiliation in the raising or training of Horses. There was a Peter Doherty living in Moydow in 1911 but he was 74 at the time of the census and then there was Peter Doherty living in Aghaboy and another living in Kilglas, but I do not know there proximity to Currycreaghan, could either location be closer to Abbeyschrule? We are assuming that James may have lived with His Uncle Patrick Corkery from July through November in 1922. During this short period he attended Loughill school,  of which Patrick was the Principle. Patrick’s wife Ellen Cumiskey Corkery  died on the 11th of November and her infant son also died at this time and their three older children were sent to Cork to live with their Paternal Grand Parents. We assume that James is shipped back to his Grandparents because he was enrolled in the Clonfide National School along with his brother John. Since both boys were quite young when they arrived I must assumed that they received their Sacraments in Abbeyshrule so I am hoping that there might be church records that might document these events.

John returned to New York sometime in November of 1925 to live with his Aunt Annie and her husband William Lennon also from Currycreaghan.  James returned to New Hampshire in February of 1926. Allegedly the arrangements were made by their Uncle Patrick Corkery, however I cannot locate either boy on any of the passengers list. They may have traveled with another family since they had not reached their majority. If you have any information  in regard to anyone mentioned above it would be most helpful.

As a side note there was also an Uncle by the name of Patrick Cumiskey living in Currycreaghan along with an Aunt Elizabeth whom lived with James and Briget Kenney who might also be a relative.

The correct Peter Doherty based on your facts is the unmarried (at least in 1911) Peter Doherty who lived in Kilcurry townland in Taghshinny civil parish ( in your notes the one in Kilglass).

If you have access to Google Maps, enter Currycreaghan. If you go southeast, you will see Kilcurry near the N55 main road. If you look to the east from Kilcurry, you will see Abbeyshrule.

The RC church is Our Lady of Lourdes. http://www.ardaghdiocese.com/parish-carrickedmond-abbeyshrule.htm

Also, found an interesting site related to Abbeyshrule.
