Hi,
I was very excited yesterday to discover some information that helped me narrow down my ancestors location in Longford County to Abbeyshrule :D.
I would appreciate any information on my 3rd Great Grandfather James Shanly/Shanley born 1799 who was convicted of Unlawful Oath in 1826 in County Longford and shipped to NSW on the 'Boyne', His fathers name is listed as Mathew Shanly, we do not know his mothers name however as James named his first son (in Australia) Mathew then we wonder if his mothers name was Mary(name of first daughter).
At the time of James' conviction Mathew applied to the court with character references pleading for his sons release stating that James was the sole provider for his 2 parents and 8 children (it doesnt state if the children were his or his parents).
James Shanley was Catholic.

As you can see from the link below, Abbeyshrule is a Civil Parish in Co. Longford:
The records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Taghshinny and Abbeyshrule begin in 1835.
There are some places where you can search online, however these websites do not have complete collections and many do not cover the period after 1900:
www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ have begun a project to upload Irish church records to their site free of charge. However so far only Counties Dublin, Kerry, Carlow and parts of Cork have been covered.
