Hello!  I found a record on line regarding the information I put in the title.  I started only knowing that my great great grandfather was named Patrick J Byrne and that he was born around 1837, was from "outside of Dublin" and that his father was named Patrick and mother Alice.  The only match I could find was the Patrick I found who was batised in you Parish.  If you can find out for me what happened to the Patrick who was baptised in 1835 that would be very helpful.  Did he emigrate to America?  Do you know when?  Do you have any advice for me regarding how I can determine if "your" Patrick J Byrne is my ancestor?

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

  • Hi Theresa, thanks for your message.

Have you tried looking up the following websites, they may be able to offer you some assistance in finding out about your Great Great Grandfather:

    https://familysearch.org/   and  http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/introduction/

Another souce which may be of interest to you is the Tithes Applotment Books. These are land records that were compliled between 1823 and 1838. There is a manuscript book for almost every parish, giving the names of occupiers, the amount of land held, and the sums to be paid in tithes to th Church. As Patrick was born c. 1835 and you have his parents names you may be able to find a record of him in this. You can search the Tithes Applotment Books here:

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.js

FInally, the Irishtimes website may be of use to as you can browse what Catholic Records are available for each specific county. For the records pertaining to the parish of Haggardstown in Co. Louth, follow this link:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/fuses/rcparishmaps/index.cfm?fuseaction=showidrecords&CityCounty=Louth&parish=Haggardstown&churchid=215

You really need more information if you want to determine if Patrick, baptised 1835, is your ancestor. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi.

I have a Patrick James Byrne in my family tree as well but he is my Great Grandfather.  I am on Ancestry dot com and I find it is very helpful but I haven't used this site but I bet it is a great complement.

My Grandfather came over from Ireland and settled in Cranston, RI.  If you need any help, let me know.  i am not sure if he was baptised in 1835 as my dad remembers his grandfather and my dad was born in 1935 which would make Grandpa Patrick over a 100 when my dad was born.  But maybe a little more research on my part with my dad might sort a few things.  Maybe my Patrick was a Jr?
