The 1901 Census shows Catharine Flannery (widow-head) and her son, Michael (1864) living together on their farm with Michael's family. Listed as House 5, Balloor TL, Castlebar Rural DED, County Mayo.

I'd love to know if the farm exhists, if the family is buried in a local cemetery, what is Balloor like and do I have any family still in Ireland as I would love to meet you!!!!!

Thank you so very much, Hope

PS: if you need any further information please let me know.

It looks like Catherine Flannery died in 1909. See index record below. I also found the civil death index record for Michael in the third quarter of 1898 so you had the correct date. The age shown was provided by the informant and that person would have relied on the year provided by the deceased during his lifetime.

I could not find a 1911 census record for the son Michael and his family. I need to look closer. it almost appears that the Balloor records are not online.

I could not find any Flannery entries in Ballor in the online Irish phonebook. You may want to contact the Castlbar RC church regarding where they may be buried.

  • Balloor townland is located abt 2km south-east of the centre of Castlebar, and here's how it appeared recently on Google Street view For a description of the general area as it was in the early 19thC see the civil parish of  Breaghwy in Lewis Topographical Dictionary of 1837 (listed as Breafy or Breaghwee)

for ref : Balloor townland on the 1911 census

  • Shane:

Thanks for finding the 1911 census record. I knew there had to be a spelling error somewhere.

I would check with the church in Castlebar or the Castlebar library branch to see what they know about Flannerys in Balloor.
