My grandma, Honoria / Annie Wright lived in Castlebar for 10 years with her 1st husband & child. She'd moved there from her parents' home in Ballyhean. Her daughter was born in 1891 at Spencer St., Castlebar. Could you advise me in which parish to look for her baptism? I find the different parish names confusing. The marrriage was in the R.C. chapel of Ballyhean.

    Hello again!

I assume you are looking for the baptismal record for the 1891 daughter? The RC parish would be Castlebar/Aglish but the parish register online only goes up to 1880. Roots Ireland indicates that they have baptisms for the parish up to 1900 but when I searched for Florence Wright, the baptismal record was not there.

Here is a link to the civil record of the birth. You will have to sign-in to see the record. Next to last record on the page.

  • Hi Roger. Thanks for your reply.  I've been having trouble accesssing the site. Kept being told my email or password were invalid. Seems to be OK now.

I'd already  found Florrie's birth registration which is how I know the address was Spencer St. I assume her baptism would have taken place soon after birth. She may have been baptised with a different Christian name. Until I saw her birth registration I didn't know her mother's "official" name in Ireland was Honora/ Honoria or Honour. Grandma was Annie so we all assumed she was called Anne. If Florrie was baptised at Ballyhean chapel would that have been in Castlebar parish then? Another possibility is that her DOB was wrong. One of her half- brothers, also born in Ireland, allegedly had 2 birthdays, 2 or 3 months apart. I found his Irish birth registration.

10year-old  Florence is on 1901 Ireland census as Flora Write (sic) with her granddad in Cornaveagh. She was "Flory" in a letter from him (written by someone else).

Yes, Ballyhean was part of the Aglish/Castlebar RC parish.
