I am trying to find a birth record for my gg grandfather, Timothy Murtaugh. He was born in Bohola on March 13, 1835. He came to America in May of 1850. His parents are Thomas Murtaugh and Bridget Early. The rest of Timothy's family came over sometime in the mid 1840's because Timothy's youngest brother was born on ship approximately 1845. I still can't find out what ship they all came on. Timothy came over with a brother and friend later than the rest of the family (1850).  On the gravemarker of Thomas and Bridget, it says they came from the parish of Killedan in County Mayo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am coming to Ireland in the middle of September for 3 1/2 weeks. Sooooo excited. Trying to find families to stay with if anyone knows of anyone who would open their home to me for a day or two.

  • Hi,

Thank you very much for your message. I have passed it on to one of our volunteers who hopefully may be able to advise you.

In the meantime, we have recently added a link to the top of our page for those who are planning on visiting in 2013. It takes you to short web form. We would really appreciate it if you could take a moment to complete any. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy your visit!

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Pamela.

I posted on here a couple of days ago, but realise my information probably seemed rather strange. I was working on a long-shot really. I wondered if the John Fisher and Mary Early I was looking for weren't perhaps married, as I haven't been able to trace them as such. I wondered if Mary had become pregnant and they had eloped and emigrated to England for the birth. I then assumed that the sisters Mary and Bridget might have used their mother's maiden name [Early] in registering the birth and at the baptism, instead of using the family name, in order to avoid detection.

As I said, it was a long-shot and perhaps a little fanciful, but it was worth a try. Please ignore my posts if they are not relevant to your family, or you have no information that may be able to assist.

    Regards,

    John Fisher

  • My Gallagher relatives lived near the Murtaghs in the Parish of Killedan.  The Gallaghers lived in the townlands of Carrownteeaun and Comderrynabinnia, and in the 1880's Mary Gallagher (a niece of my great-grandfather) married a Luke Murtha, who was from the townland of Cloondalagh in the same parish, so that may be the townland which the Murtaghs called home.

The surnames Murtha and Murtagh are the same, and were sometimes used interchangeaby by the family (they were Irish speaking and the Anglicized forms of names were still in flux in those days).  That branch of the Murtaghs, as well as some of the Gallaghers, all moved to St. Louis, Missouri not long after that marriage.

Roger is right about the baptismal records not going back far enough, but there are some marriage records for Killedan going further back, and I happen to be looking through them today.  If I see anything about the Murtaghs there I will post further info.
