Hello Roger and others , In preparation for my trip to Mayo I am running down some other family lines including the Goldens from Rathlacken area. What I know is that Patrick Golden was born in the Rathlacken area about 1840. I believe his parents were Martin Golden and Mary Ford (although the wife is not a certainty). Patricks siblings includes John, Mary, Martin and Thomas J. The family emmigrated to Pennsylvania after 1857. Patrick married Mary O'Hora in Dunmore, PA.    Any help confirming Patrick's parents or information on baptism records would be appreciated. There was a Martin Golden in Griffiths Valuation leasing land just south of the coast guard pier in Rathlacken and I'd like to confirm that was our Martin. Very excited to be there this summer! Thank you!

  • Hi Victoria!

    Welcome back!

I see that Col has already provided a lot of information. I will also alert our parish liaison for North Mayo who covers about seven parishes including Lackan. Have a great trip!

  • Hi vmocak,

COI mentioned quite a bit - Rathlacken records aren't so good.  Parish Records don't start until about 1851 / 1855.  Many pages are lost, but Ancestry has the original records, so you might want to scan through them.

Hi.  I have been following your post.  I have a GGF named Martin Golden from Mayo born about 1840.  His siblings were John, Michael, and Mary Golden, but no Patrick.  They emigrated in about 1854-1855 to New York and settled in Pittston, PA...about 10 miles from Scranton/Dunmore.  My documents show a mother named Nancy in both immigration doc and 1860 census for Pittston.  The census indicates the eldest son name to be John, so I assume his father's name was John.  I have DNA tested as a positive match to Thomas Golden from Mayo and Andrew Golden from Lacken, Mayo at FTDNA.  I am curious to see what you may find in your travels.

    Good luck!

    John Golden

  • I'm a bit late to this thread but I'm Golden originally from Lackan. My grandfather was Michael Thomas Golden (1913), his father was Michael Golden (disputed birth date c.1870) and mother was Bridget (c.1888 nee Coolican - parents Pat and Mary nee Kearney). Michael's parents (aka my gg-grandparents) were Pat and Bridget Golden. All from the Rathlacken area. After the land commission, the family was settled in Farmhill Kilfian. Interested to read that maybe of the Lacken parish records are missing as it is the one part of my family that I can only find sporadic records for.

  • Hi Edel - very interesting!  Lackan records only start at about 1854, but many pages are missing so things are spotty. I have my great grandfather from Castlemagee & his father was from Cashel, so I am somewhat familiar with the area.  Can you find them on Griffiths Valuation?

  • Hi all - I am seeing this thread six years after its last post, but if anyone is still connected ...

I am descended from Martin Tighe and Bridget Ford of Rathlacken. Their marriage record is in the diocese of Killala, showing it took place in Lacken on 6 Feb 1856 with witnesses William Robinson and Mary Golden.

They emigrated with two sons to Dunmore, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania before the 1866 birth of their daughter Nellie. In Dunmore they lived in close proximity to the family of Patrick J. Horan and Catherine Ford, also of Rathlacken and whose descendants match our family DNA tests.

Virginia, I know that we have communicated in the past about potentially being related through my mother's paternal Morans, which may still be the case; but I now think there is a very strong likelihood that we are connected through her maternal Ford family from the Rathlacken area.
