Looking for anything on my grandparents/uncles.  My grandfather, Pat Malley or O'Malley, and family were moved to Barstown, Batterstown by the Land Commission from Co Mayo.  My grandfather appears on the Land Registry in Meath in 1938.  Two uncles remained in Ireland, Mick & Martin O'Malley, all now deceased.  Does anyone recall this family please?

  • Dear Gerri

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out and apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

You might like to take a look at this article about the Land Commission and its records - they are retained by the National Archives but not available to the public in their entirety due to privacy issues. The main way you will learn about the family is if you can find then in the 1850s Griffith's Valuation. From there you can trace them forward until they leave the land and presumably take up residence in Meath. You can read about it HERE

Do you know who Pat was married to and when? O'Malley is one of the most common names in Mayo.

I hope someone with a connection to the family will be in touch. In the meantime, I wanted to invite you to add your ancestor's details to our XO Chronicles. You can learn more about it HERE and it might be another avenue to consider so that your ancestor's details can be seen by others.

    Best wishes

  • Hi Clare, thank you for the information.  Pat Malley married Honoria (Nora) King in Killasser Co Mayo on 15 February 1908

  • Hi Gerri

It's a pity that Pat and Nora's marriage record does not include either set of parents' names as this makes it difficult to locate a potential baptism record for them and their siblings. You will have to make a number of assumptions too as to the age Patrick married, at least 20 years old but likely older. In that way any potential baptisms for siblings could be tracked down but not with 100% accuracy. You can have a look at civil birth records HERE

    Best wishes
