Thomas F. Devanney born Sep. 1849 in Ireland and married Kate/Catherine Smith also from Ireland.  We think his father was Patrick Divany born around 1816 in Grangegeeth, Monknewtown, Dowth, Rathkenny Meath Ireland.  Trying to confirm this and move on from there.

The four places you mention are all civil parishes in northeast Co. Meath near the border with Co. Louth. I searched for a baptismal record for Thomas with father Patrick and did not find a record. I also did not find a Patrick Devanny (and variants) in the Griffiths Valuation for Co. Meath which was around 1853. I also did not find a marriage record for Thomas and Kate Smith. Any other clues? Have you considered DNA testing?

  • Thank-you for your response.  We have so little information.  In the 1880 Census it shows the couple, Thomas and Kate Smith Devanney in Stratton Illinois and an arrival year in the states as 1867.  It shows birth of both in Ireland.  Thomas was born in 1849.  Their marriage is 1868, so probably was in the states, but we haven't found that information as yet.  Both died in Connecticut USA.  I have done DNA testing and show my mother's side as 90% Irish.  Their obituaries show the names as stated, but don't mention any parent names.  If we have the wrong father, then the area of Ireland could be incorrect.
