Hi folks,

In 1830, Robert Cornfield married Ann Woods the daughter of George & Mary Woods  from the community of/near Carrickmacross Town. Shortly thereafter George Woods with the rest of his family James, Margaret, Nathaniel, William, George and John Woods immigrated to Peel Co. Upper Canada, British North American . Later about 1850 William Thornton and his wife Ann Bell with their family namely William,Robert, Margaret, Martha and Ann emmigrated from Ardragh Townland, Magheross parish in Co. Monaghan to Peel Co. Upper Canada. There  Ann Thornton, a presbyteran married John Woods (above) a follower of the Church of Ireland.

    The tithe applotment records for 1823 show 3 Thornton households in Ardragh. (David, William & Robert).

    Griffiths Valuation shows a James Thornton farming in Ardragh in 1861. He was on plot 11 which was a 30 acre farm.

    The family were gone by the time of the 1901 census.

      I have been following various families who emigrated from Magheross parish to Peel Co.  I have a Johannes (John?) Thornton who m., in Peel Co., Elizabeth Nelson, d.o. Clement Nelson & Jane Oliver of Carrickmaclim.  I believe her sister, Sarah Nelson, m. Robert Thornton. I'm thinking they must be part of your Thorntons.

      My father has a number of Thornton matches to his yDNA (he is a Hunter, ancestors from Mullaghcroghery, Magheross).  Have you done any DNA testing?  Do you have an online tree?

  • Actually, a further search has Johannes' name listed also as Robert in the marriage registration, s.o William & Ann Bell. Robert was married to Elizabeth Nelson.
