I'm looking for information about Patrick Mee who was born about 1820, lived at Greaghnarogue, died on 11th September 1898, and is buried at St Michael's Catholic Church at Corduff. He has a large headstone in the graveyard there.

His daughter Catherine Marron is buried with him.

Patrick was married to Eliza Reilly but I don't have any information about her.

Patrick and Eliza's children were: Mary (married John McQuillan), Catherine (born ca 1866, married Michael Marron), Bridget Mee, Michael Mee (went to Alaska via USA), James Mee (married Elizabeth Martin in 1875 or 76), Phillip (born 1847, went to USA), Patrick (born 1848, went to Australia), Peter (born 1854, went to Australia), John (born 1850, went to USA), and Francis Joseph Mee (born 1868).

I'm interestsed in Patrick and Eliza's marraige date; Eliza's birth and death records; what happened to the children who did not emigrate; and whether there are any descendants of this family still living in the same area.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Catherine Quinn.

  • hi,

In 1823 there was a Patrick MEE listed in the 1823 Tithe Applotment return - this is possibly Patrick father of Patrick b.1820s.

There are a few MEEs mentioned in Griffiths Valuation of 1858-1860.

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNam…

Patrick MEE b.1820s left a Will and the original image is on the PRONI website.

    http://www.proni.gov.uk/

On the right-hand side of the page click on "Will calenders".

Then on the next page cick on "Search for Will calenders".

The Will doesn't mention his wife, and all his property seems to have been left as part of a marriage agreement - a dowry to a son-in-law I guess ??

There are a few small bequests to his children, one of them in the USA.

This is the birth record for Francis Joseph b. JUN 1868.

Unfortunately there are no official marriage or birth records for Catholics before 1864.

There were two MEE families living in Greaghnaroog in 1901.

Head of the households were Peter and John.

I don't know if any of the family still live in Monaghan, you could go to the following website and complete the enquiry form with as many details as possible - these people are based in Monaghan and are helping people reconnect to their Monaghan roots.

    www.countymonaghanfund.com

Also try google, there seem to be a number of posts on genealogy notice boards for a Patrick MEE from Monaghan.

  • Hi,

I am related to Patrick's son James (1853-1920) who married Elizabeth Martin (1852-). She is the niece of my great-grandfather, which I just recently discovered. Her father's name was James (1833-1983), I don't know her mother's name. I am still working on this. It appears she and the kids immigrated to Montana. Do you have any other information on Elizabeth Martin?

Michael Martin (1807-1875) married Bridget Keenan (1810-1889) and had 3 sons that I know of - James (1833-1893), Peter, my ggrandfather (1845-1917) and Patrick (1847-1911). The Martins are from Tiragarvan, Carrickmacross, Monaghan. Sometimes the place they lived is listed as Mullaboy.

    Thanks. Anita Roberts
