My great, grandfather David Carroll married Mary Bannon in 1898 Manhattan NY.  The marriage certificate records her birth in Ireland and her parents as James Bannon and Catherine Corcoran.  Based on various documents, Mary's birth is somewhere between 1869 and 1875.  That is all I know on  Bannon and Corcoran in America.

I am trying to trace them to Ireland.  The only possible link found to date is as follows (based on irishroots.ie research):

James Bannon marriage Catherine Corcoran on 30 Nov 1867 in Shinrone, County Offaly.  Their address is Derrinclare.

James father is Edward Bannon and mother appears to be Madge Cox.  Edward was baptised on 11 May 1811 in Balloughloe, County Westmeath.  His parents were Edward Bannon and Catherine Brady.

Catherine's father is Timothy Corcoran.  Timothy's wife is possibly Ann Shanahan.  Besides Catherine Corcoran, there was a son named Timothy Corcoran baptised on 29 April 1843 in Shinrone (county recorded as Tipperary).  Address is Derinclear.

Catherine Corcoran was born abt. 1835.  James Bannon born abt. 1835 and baptised on 13 Sept 1839 in Castletown-Geoghan, County Westmeath.

Catherine and James Bannon children:

  • Mary Bannon baptised 5 April 1869 in Shinroe address recorded as Touragh.  County recorded as Kings (an old name I believe) and Tipperary.
  • Honora Bannon baptised 6 Aug 1870 in Shinrone.
  • Kate Bannon born 15 May 1872 in Shinrone
  • Possibly Eliz Bannon baptised 22 Oct 1875 in Shinrone

Any help on these familes will be appreciated especially concerning immigration to the US.  Thanks!

Thank you Roger!  Yours was a very useful post.   The Bannon's two eldest daughter (Mary and Catherine/Kate) arrived on Ellis Island on 20 April 1895 aboard the Etruria from Queensport.  Probably never returning to Ireland nor to see their parents and two younger sisters again.

Armed with the info you provided, I can try to drill-down to find more specifics such as churches, grave sites, etc to visit when my family and I travel to Ireland.

The two Bannon sisters left from Queenstown (now Cobh). Are you headed to Ireland this year? We like to keep track of visitors. Also, I live north of Baltimore.

Hi Roger!  Yes, Queenstown, the last port of call for the Titanic!  We are not visiting this summer, perhaps next.

Hi Jane!  We are first cousins once removed.  I recently visited the grave site of your mother with my family.  As you know, she rests with her father and mother in Holy Cross, North Arlington.  I am extremely interested in communicating with you.  I have a rather extensive family tree.  I traced David's father William back to Canada and his father Thomas to Ireland.  I also have discovered the Bannon and Corcoran ancestors. In addition, I have immigration information on Mary and youngest sister Catherine.  Due to the sensitive cirumstances of our families, would you please contact me at dcar585672@aol.com

  • Dave,   According to church records, Mary Bannon's mother was indeed Catherine Corcoran, but she was the daughter of a Patt Corcoran.  There had been a Tim Corcoran who had about 12 children, one of which was Catherine, but she doesn't seem to have been the one who married James Bannon and was the mother of Mary, and her sisters.  I haven't found out yet who Patt's parents were.  Patt and his wife, Jane, had another daughter, Mary, and a son Thomas.    If you ever go to that area you can check it out at the church in Shinrone.

  • Hi Jane!  I hope you and your family are well.  I think that Patt and Jane could be Catherine's parents.  However, I favor Tim and Ann.  Here's why, but first a brief background.

In Shinrone circa. 1838 to 1841, I have noted two sets of married Corcoran's- Patt Corcoran and Jane Englbie.  Also married are Tim Corcoran and Ann Shanahan.  They are probably related but I do not know.      So the question is who are Catherine's parents .... Patt and Jane or Tim and Ann, maybe someelse??     I think both sets had daughters and gave the name Catherine.

My review of the availabe records leads me to favor Tim and Ann.  The main reason for that conclusion is that I saw an abstract of the marriage record of James Bannon and Catherine Corcoran.  The father of Catherine is recorded as Tim. (source:  rootsireland.ie).  Also, the 1911 census places Catherine's birth year in 1838.

I did see the baptism record of a Catherine Corcoran to Patt Corcoran and Jane Englbie on the 29 Aug 1847 in Shinrone.  1847 is too old of our Catherine!   I have not uncovered a birth/baptism record of Catherine to Tim Corcoran and Ann Shanahan.  Tim and Ann baptized son Tim in 1843.

So I have to lean toward Tim and Ann given that Tim is recorded as the father of Catherine (in the abstracted record) for James Bannon marriage to Catherine on 30 Nov 1867 in Shinrone.  Also, our Catherine was born circa 1838 making the Catherine from Patt and Jane too young having been born in 1847.

  • If I ever go to Shinrone again, I will recheck the church records to see if I am mistaken.

  • I am traveling to Shinrone and Westmeath County on 29 August 2019.  I will post here if I find something of value beyond what I already discussed.
