I am searching for siblings of Bernard Loonam of Banagher, County Offaly, Ireland. He was born about 1841 and died in 1900. He married Katherine Dolan who was born about 1851 and died March 1911 in the district of Ballinsole. Their children were Mary Ann, Eleen (Nellie), Mary, Honora (Nora), Margaret (Maggie), Chrissie, William (Willie), Patrick (Packy), Bernard, John and Elizabeth. I have pretty good information regarding some of these "children" (my grandmother was Mary Ann) but I need the siblings of Bernard Loonam 1841-1900. I understand his father was also a Bernard 1773-1869 of Clongawnymore, Co. Offaly but I don't have a wife for this Bernard. Any information regarding the Loonams in this area would be appreciated. I have made connections with other descendants who are also interested and are seeking the same information.

There are lots of otheres, but I think this is enough to be going on with!!

According to http://www.seanruad.com/cgi-bin/iresrch, Banaghar is a townland (AKA Kylebeg) in the county of Kings, the Barony of Garrycastle, Civil Parish of Reynagh, PLU Parsonstown. These marriages may therefore be of interest (siblings of Bernard, perhaps?)

  • Thank you Colette, there is a lot of good info here. I am most interested in finding the siblings of the Bernard Loonam (B; 6 Feb 1841; D; 6 Dec 1900) who was married to Catherine Dolan. I believe Bernard's father was also a Bernard Loonam (B; abt 1773; D; 17 July 1869). I don't know the spouse of this Bernard but your third record here may be a clue. You indicate Brigidam Loonam baptized 13 Dec 1818 whose father was Bernard Loonam and whose mother was Maria Loonam. This would also indicate that Brigidam was a sibling of Bernard Loonam/Dolan. These are large families so I am sure there are a lot of Loonams to search through but if I can discover Bernard's siblings I can connect a number of Loonam trees. Thank you so much!

  • Hi David,

Just saw this post and now realise the dates don't coincide with the Bernard Loonam in my family tree(1853-1914) but my cousin Kathleen may still be able to help you.

    Kind Regards,

  • David, the name Bernard appears often as Bryan, in case that helps.

HI.  I found yor query several years after you posted it, so I hope this reaches you.  I can tell you a bt about Bernard Loonam.  He was the 2nd husband of Catherine Cooper of Cloghan, Co. Offaly (1869-1949).   Her first husband was a John Joseph Malamphy, who she married in Trenton NJ where several of her Cooper siblings had emigrated, in 1891.  He died around 1895, and she emigrated back to Cloghan.   Not sure how she met Bernard Loonam, but they married in Parsontown (which was nearby or another name for Cloghan, or nearby Birr, in Co. Offaly) in first quarter of 1896.  They had 2 children in Co. Offaly, Christina (1898) and Mary Ellean (1899).  Their next child Thomas w as borhn in Westmeant in June 1900, so that indicates when they moved. Additional children i have were Bernard Loonam 1903, Robert Loonam 1906 (named for Catherine's father). Catherine's son John Joseph melamphy, from her frist marriage, lived with the Loonams in 1911, and he died in 1914.  Catherine Cooper was the daughter of Robert Cooper (1824-1980) and Catherine Smollen (1832-1901), both (to my knowledge) of Cloghan, Co Offaly.  Several siblings stayed in Co. Offaly, including Robert Cooper Jr and Bridget Cooper who married Patrick Coughlin.  A number of other sublins emigrated to the US, to Trenton, NJ.  They include my greatgrandmother Mary Ann Cooper (1864-1941), who married Daniel Kelly, Rose Ann Cooper (1865-1928(, who married Michael Brown, and John Cooper the youngest child (1874-1962) who married Brigid Meara, as well as Patrick (Paddy) Coughlin, so on Bridget Cooper and Patrick Coughlin.  Hope this reaches you nd answers some questions.

  • Ann,

Thanks for the info but the Bernard Loonam you are referring to appears to be a cousin to the Bernard Loonam I am following. I do have your Bernard Loonam and Catherine Cooper in my tree on ancestry although I show different dates for Catherine. I will apply some of your info and plug it into what I have. There are a lot of Bernard and/or Bryan Loonams in the family so it can b quite confusing but we evidently are related.

  • There will be a Loonam gathering in Tullamore Aug. 3, 4 & 5 of 2018. Many Loonams from around the world will be descending upon Tullamore and the surrounding area searching for family data and connections.

  • Do you have any more information regarding the gathering? On my grandmother's side we have traced ourselves to the Loonams and I am currently visiting Ireland for the first time and I would really love to connect with that side of the family someday. It would be a real blessing to be able to make contact with my Irish roots in that way. Thanks.

  • Tanner, I don't really have any new info but if you are on Facebook, I suggest searching for Loonam Family Gathering. It is a group and you can ask to join. As I understand so far, there will be a meet and greet on the first night, a dinner on the second night and a mass on the third day. That should leave some free time to either meet up further with some members or search the surrounding towns looking for clues of ancestors. As for costs, everyone is on their own. This being the first gathering, it may be a bit loose but it should still be fun and productive. There will be members from the U.S., England, France, maybe Australia and about 40 from Ireland.
