Hello, I'm looking for my great-grandfather, Martin Joseph Dempsey, who was born around August, 1866 in Ireland, and immigrated to the US around 1883. I found an obituary for his brother, Michael, that said he was a native of Cloonfree (sp?), Strokestown, Roscommon.  I don't know who his parents are or anything else about the family.  He married Winnifred Mary Ryan in San Francisco.  Winifred was also born in Strokestown, Roscommon around August, 1860.  Her parents were Thomas Ryan and Winifred Mc Laughlin. That is all I know about either of them, and would be so grateful to receive any information on them!  Thank you so much!

  • Hello All, 

     

    It told me that I had to join the parish in order to comment, I'm not sure if I'm in the right one or not. I got here through a Google search for Dempsey genealogy in County Roscommon. 

     

    My grandmother's grandfather--John Dempsey--was born in Roscommon in 1850, according to several public records, coming to Massachusetts in 1860 when he was 10 years old. John Dempsey's marriage record shows that his parents were named Michael and Mary. 

     

    I've been performing searching every which way on Ancestry.com and can't find any more about the family. I appear to be at a total impasse. No immigration/travel records, nothing. 

    Any tips on trying to learn more would be appreciated.
