I am looking for more information about my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather Edward Ford, his army records state he was born in the parish of Cloonfinlough, in or near the town of Roscommon, his father may have been Michael Ford. A Michael Ford appears on the tithe applotment Book for the townland of Clooncagh Cruce, Cloonfinlough parish.

Edward married first Mary Maguire in 1843, after her death he married in 1849, a widow Margaret Mchearn nee Carlos. She had two children from her first marriage Patrick and Winifred Mchearn. Edward had Maria,Bridget and Eliza ford from his first marriage, then to gether he and Margaret  had Maria, Ann, Jane, Ellen and Catherine. They appear on the 1861 cencus in Bolton, Lancs, UK and later move to nearby Bury. He was a chelsea pensioner and had been in the army 47th reg of foot for 20 yrs. He died in Bury, Lancashire, uk in 1878 age on certificate 67yrs but his army records say he was age 21 in 1820. He is 56 on the 1861 cencus and 70 on the 1871 cencus. So born between 1799 and 1811. Hope someone can help?

  • Hi Margaret,

Do you happen to know whether he was Protestant or R C?

Cloonfinlough records come under Strokestown & PRONI has Strokestown records (according to the Representative Church Body Library website) but it doesn't give the years covered! If R C there are Cloonfinlough records at the Nat Library (registers.nli.ie) but they are later than the years you want I'm afraid.

No birth/baptism record on www.rootsireland.ie/; the first marriage record is there but has no parents' names!!

  • Hi thanks for your reply, he was Roman Catholic. I have his two marriages and the births of his children from the parish records but as you say cannot find his earlier birth record. His first mariage to Maria Maguire 28.4.1843 has a note underneath stating what looks like latin ...consanguinatyis grantis 2nd and 3rd degree... I take this to mean Edward Ford was a first cousin and Maria Maguire a 2nd cousin to a common ancester ...does anyone know if this is a correct assumption?
