  • I'm having difficulty finding birth records for the girls in the picture. Were they born in Ireland?

Gallagh is a 230 acre townland near the Shannon River. About 7 miles northeast of Roscommon town on the way to Lanesborough.

  • Hi Roger all of Patrick Scally's Children were born in England, I'm to understand some were born in Nantwich an Crewe Cheshire, an Whitchurch Shorpshire Patrick married Mary Ryan in Nantwich Cheshire 7th May 1870, they were parents to 10 Children,

    Michael 1868 - 1868

    John       1872 - 1903

    Francis   1874 - 1922

    Annie      1876

    Honey     1876

    Thomas 1876  -  1933

    Margaret  1881  -  1955

  • Can you tell us Patrick’s father’s name and occupation from his English marriage certificate? I can see 3 Scally farms in Galliagh: Thomas, John senior, John junior and 1 labourer’s cottage occupied by Peter. Need a father’s name to narrow your search.

I think that Honey & Annie may be the same person. There’s a birth for Hannah Scalley (mother’s maiden name Ryan) registered in 1876 in Whitchurch, Shropshire. Volume 6A page 756. Hannah is often shortened to Anna/Annie and Honey is obviously like Hannah. She may well have used both names. Not uncommon.  I do not see a twin or second female birth around that period.

In addition to Hannah, I see a possible birth for Thomas Scalley in Wigan, Lancs in 1879 and births in Nantwich, Cheshire, for Margaret, 1881, Jane 1883, Edward James 1885 & Mary Ann 1887. All spelled Scally.  John Scalley birth in Whitchurch 1872.

  • I searched the statutory deaths 1864 to 1901 for Francis and Eleanor (Ellen) but did not find either in Gallagh.

I can see that there is a tree on Ancestry (Kevin Eccles tree) which shows Francis Scally as born in Elphin c 1820 and dying in Cheshire in July 1891. I looked at the English death records for 1891 but did not see one that matches that information. However you could contact the tree owner and ask them for their source.

Gallagh is in the RC parish of Clontuskert.  Unfortunately they have no records earlier than 1865 so if that’s where Francis originated then there are no records to search. If he originated in Elphin then their records start in 1807. I searched for a Scally – Kelly marriage but without success. Probably they married in a parish that doesn’t have any records for the 1840s.
