Hi My name is John Dooley, I have been trying to gather facts and locations about my fathers family.

I do know that my Great Grandfather John M Dooley was married to Ellen Fallan from the parish of Kilbride Roscommon, and he was escorted by Judy Fallan to Boston from port Galway in 1850. My Great grandfather was 18 years of age and Judy was 50 years of age according to passenger list,  His Father was Patrick Dooley known as a carpenter. His wife was Mary (Lynch) . They had a daughter Margaret and another son Michael . The only clue I have of connecting to Roscommon is it is marked on their grave here in Lynn Massachusetts . If there is any info or a descendant that may still be in Ireland please feel free to contact me by email at  doolmo@yahoo.com. any information or comments will be appreciated Thank You.   I had the pleasure of visiting Ireland in 2013 and visited my Maternal ancestors homesteads and would like to visit again to see my Paternal homestead.  Thank you again.

  • John:

Can you clarify if John and Ellen were married in Ireland or in the States. RC church records for Kilbride RC parish start in 1835 which is likely after John's baptism.

I also looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listings for Co. Roscommon and there were five Dooley entries, none in Kilbride parish. There was a Patrick Dooley listed in Kilcooley civil parish (Ardkeenagh townland).

  • Hello John,

From your comment it appears Ellen Fallan was from the Kilbride Parish and it is unclear as to the parish of origin of John M. Dooley.

As regards Ellen, there appears to be a B Fallon recorded in 1826 resident in the townland of Holeywell (approx 302 acres) with a possible lease on a small acreage of 4 acres. The landlord was a Rev. Thomas Blakeney. I think it inconceivable that your Dooley family did not have a small amount of land set aside for their own food requirements (tilled land) which would have been subject to tithes payable to the Church of Ireland and thereby record details should exist.

The Holeywell name does not survive the reorganisation and merger of smaller townlands after 1830 though it would appear to be part of the larger Cootleige Townland , Kilbride Civil Parish, Roscommon at some later date - https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Coolteige,+Co.+Roscommon,+Ireland/@53.6781516,-8.1791495,14z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x485c24786e44cca3:0x2600c7a819c828c2 .

By 1853 the Blakeney family sell their Estate of Holeywell and emigrate to Australia. Clearly the writing was on the wall and their only possible means of survival for your family may have been to emigrate as you have indicated. By 1857 there are no apparent family by the name of Fallon/Fallan resident in the Cootleige townland.

As for your Dooley family a little more information may be of some help. Links below may be of some use in your future research.
