  • The Kilbride marriages are in the 10 Sep 1838 thru 15 Oct 1846 records of Kilbride(Elphin).

Some of the names mentioned are having children in the 1835-1849 Kilbride records..

Of  paramount importance would be the marriage of Eugene ONeill and Margaret McDonnell, Edward Dwyer and Marg. Hunt. and finally Michael Gardiner and Elisabeth McGuire.

  • A record transcribed at rootsireland shows that Michael Gardener and Elizabeth McGurie married 16 Feb. 1836 in the RC parish of Strokestown, Co. Roscommon. Witnesses were Ann and John McGuire. I did not see marriages for the other two couples.

  • Great! I see the record at NLI.

One final request. Would you please search your sources for the following marriages and time frames:

Thomas Hunt () Ann Casserly from 1844-1850 and John Hunt () Mary Anne Donnelly from 1848-1850

These marriages, if recorded, were likely in the Elphin Diocese or Achonry Diocese.

  • Thank you Patricia. I'm trying to eliminate all possibilities before I abandon the search. Next stop: a thorough search of England and US sources.

  • A Michael Gardener was a suspect in the killing of Major Mahon in Kilbride parish in November 1847

  • Yes Flanagan 132: I'm researching the Hunt's of Townland Doorty. Thaddy Hunt's son Michael was a witness for the Crown. I wonder if Michael Gardener's wife Elizabeth McGuire had any connection with the notorious Molly McGuires?

  • I believe it was Patrick Hunt who was the Crown witness, he was given free passage to America. He was not the son of Thady.

Peter Duffy's book, The Killing of Major Mahon is an invaluable source.

I Believe The Molly Maguires was a fictitious name. They were also active in Liverpool and the coalfields in Pennsylvania.

  • Yes, I stand corrected, it was Patrick Hunt the Crown's witness. Though Duffy's book, I believe, states that he was Thaddy Hunt's son.

I've followed Thaddy and his family to St. Louis, MO USA. His family is listed on the Family Search website. Great to find someone that shares interest in this story.

  • Hi Kelly, Peter Duffy is very clear that Thady Hunt was not Patrick's father. On page 259 he refers to "a cluster of homes of the Hunt clan in Doorty". On page 273, as a Crown witness at the trial, Patrick speaks of "walking to his father's house in Doorty, travelling through the sallies in Thady Hunt's garden to get there". There is mention of Major Mahon's vehicle "passing close to the homes of Patrick Hunt's father, the Widow Hunt, and Thady Hunt in Doorty", this is on page 261.

By 1901 there were no Hunts in Doorty. They had moved a few kilometre south to Ballinderry.

    Among the Hunt headstones in Ballinderry cemetery are the following;

May Almighty God have mercy on the souls of Bridget Hunt alias Taige, B. and Thady Hunt who departed this life June 1780. Monument was erected By their son Thady Hunt for their posterity. May they rest in peace Amen.

O Lord have mercy on the soul of Roderick Hunt who departed this life June 27th 1868 aged 71 years. His son James Hunt who departed this life March 11th 1847 aged 12 years. [Most likely a famine victim]

  • I'm back Flanagan132. I agree Duffy does not state that Thady was Patrick Hunt's father. Furthermore, Duffy implies that the father and Thady are separate entities.

However, I would like to present a circumstantial argument to you that Thady was Patrick's father. It involves Patrick Hunt's aunt Margaret O'Neill.

If you're interested I would prefer to present it via email. It would be easier for me to paste the documents and discussions could be ongoing.

My email is srebla.mot@gmail.com. Hope to hear from you. Best
