My  3x GF, Peter Hagan, owned a home in Rinnafarna- which is a subdivision of Knockhall.  He is listed on the 1830s Tithe Applotment record.  The property passed to his daughter, Margaret, who married Michael McGarry and it stayed in the family until about 2015.  Wondering if anyone else who belongs here has family from the Rinnafarna subdivision and wondering where folks from there would have been buried- I have not been able to find Peter's death record or Margaret's.

Thanks so much,

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Civil registration of deaths started in 1864 and I'm confident that Peter Hagan died before 1864.

The 1882 marriage record for Francis McGarry son of Michael McGarry and Margaret Hagan indicates that Michael was deceased prior to 1882. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1884/10893/5978848.pdf

I did find this 1880 death record for a Michael McGarry from Knockhall. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1880/06486/4866678.pdf  He was married and the informant was M. McGarry which could have been Margaret.

I did not see a death record for Margaret.

Records for the RC parish of Kilglass do not start until 1865 so there would be no baptismal records for children of Michael and Margaret. ( Looks like Francis was born around 1847)

I would contact the RC parish in Kilglass https://www.elphindiocese.ie/parishes-ministries/parish-details/?parishID=30  to see where the local cemetery is located. It is unlikely they have records or headstones back to the 1800s uncless a subsequent generation added a headstone.

  • Hello Roger!  Thank you soooo much for your time and for searching for me!  I am so grateful.  Can't wait until I can go to Roscommon for a visit.  I will try to reach out to the parish again.

Mary -  I have relatives from Renafarna/Knockhall.  They are the Gaffney edward Gaffney and Madge his wife lived there around Griffiths.  There is a kilglass cemetery but I know my 2x great grandparents in nearby mullaghmacormick have no stone.  I do have a picture of their house and was wondering about the Drumondy school which they attended.

  • The information i have is her maiden name was Conway but it is information that was passed down and I have no source for it.  My dad who worked on genealogy had it written as such.  If you find out anything about the Gaffney family would love to hear

  • I have not seen any information on Gaffney or Conway.  Will keep my eye out and let you know.  I did reach out to owners of a B&B in Rinnafarna.  The owners said that there are still McHues and Mahadys in the area and a "Pa Murphy" who was 98 at the time of the email last May.

Will keep looking and try to peice together more about the families that lived there!  Hope to visit in the next couple years.

  • Aw...God bless him!  Thanks so much for sharing his obit.  Sounds like he had a wonderful family!  Wish my Lizzie McGarry was still around too, to share the stories of my family and those of the area.

Would love to meet you Derek if I am able to get there in the coming years!  My goal is to visit the areas my ancestors were from!  Hopefully will be able to do that soon!

  • Hello - I am following up on a reply by Mary about the owner of a BB in Rinnafarna who mentioned that McCues still live in the area.  I am a Mccue from Kilglass area.  We have been unable to make an connections up to this point.  We were last in the Kilglass area three years ago but we could not get any leads.  Is is possible for me to connect with that owner and see if there are McCues in the area?  My family is Patrick McCue (1817-1880) m Ann McGuire (1822-1878). Their son John McCue (1840-1908) m Margaret Kilbane (1842-1908).  Their son was Patrick McCue (1859) and he is the last of the family born in Ireland.  They emigrated to Rutland Vermont and settled in with the families of the Ballykilcline Eviction. We have some indication that Patrick McCue (1817) was born closer to Boyle but the family is a bit hard to tie down.

Thanks for any ideas or help!

  • Hi Jennie-

Sorry I never saw your comment.  The bed and breakfast place in Rinnafarna is call Keogh's Country Retreat.  The owners were very nice to me and send me a bit of info that they knew of when I contacted them.
