Hi, I'm new to my ireland ancestors.  I've read lots to do with my family Lally, but non of it seems to be mine..  Is this a common Irish name?

Anyway, mine is John Lally about 1826, he had 2 sisters Catherine who married Thomas Dolan in Stokestown Roscommon.   then Elizabeth married a Phillip Oare  and in according to the 1851 census they were living all together  together in Shropshire England.  there was another brother  Peter.

My john married a Mary Knight I think in Shropshire, England or could be Montmouthshire Wales (where they met) I know John Lally and Mary Knight were the parents to my Great Grandmother Ellen Lally who was born in Shropshire England.  (I have her birth certificate and marriage Certificate to George Crawshaw Tomlinson) in Accrington Lancashire.

My mother has heard that my family were greatly effected by the Potato Famine and that is why they left Ireland, but I'd love to get more information.

If anybody has information, or this resembles someone out there, I'd love to hear from you.

thanks so much

Do you know if Elizabeth was younger than John? RC church records for the Strokestown area start in 1830. I located an 1832 baptismal record for an Elizabeth Lally. Not sure if this is your ancestor.

You are correct that that area was particularly hit hard by the Famine. In fact, the National Famine Museum is liocated in Strokestown and there are many books about the effects of the Famine in that area. http://www.strokestownpark.ie/famine-museum

  • Di,

You ask if Lally was a common name. There are 1368 people of that name in Ireland in the 1901 census (out of a total of 4.5 million).

I looked for a marriage between John Lally and Mary Knight in England around the 1850s/1860s but cannot see one listed. (The marriage cert would be helpful because it should contain both their fathers names and occupations, and so would help your research). When and where was their first child born?

It may just be a coincidence but Familysearch has a Michael Lally born 16.8.1864 and a John Lally born 19.7.1866 both in Ballymahon, Co. Longford to John Lally & Mary Knight:

  • Hi Roger,

thanks for you help.  In this case I have Elizabeth being born in 1817 which is an approximate coming of the 1581 census in Shropshire.

I'm horrible lost in Ireland.  wish I could just come visit and see all the records myself.

My other side of the family (Mehegan) come from Cork.   that will be my next adventure.  but one thing at a time.  :-)

Anyway.  All my GG Grandfather's hints have said IRELAND.   I only recently narrowed it down to Strokestown because that is where Catherine b 1816 married Thomas Dolan in 1835.    I'm not even sure that Strokestown is/was my GG Grandfather's home town.. It could have been Dolan's home place or they settled there.

Thanks so much for your efforts..  I'll keep trying.. somewhere out there has to be some informaton.  :-)

    take care

    Di.

  • Di,

I am a bit puzzled by the 1851 census information you have found. I searched the 1851 census and I found Philip and Elizabeth Oare at 4 Walkers Houses, Shrewsbury, Shropshire. Is that the entry you have found?

If so, you will see that both Philip and Elizabeth were born in Shropshire. Not Ireland. Her place of birth was the quaintly named Ruyton 11 towns, which is a village in Shropshire.

Nearby at 6 Walker?s Houses was Catherine Dolan (wife of Thomas), her 2 sons and John & Peter Lawley, both described as brothers in law, though more accurately they are probably just Catherine?s brothers. Catherine, John & Peter are born in Ireland. So they might be your Lallys OK, but I am not sure about Elizabeth next door. She looks to have been born in England. Looking at the civil marriages for England & Wales, I see a possible marriage in Shrewsbury in Apr ? Jun 1841 between a Philip Oake and Elizabeth Cox. Now there are 2 other possible brides listed on that page, and you would need to buy the certificate to find out for certain, but my feeling is that Philip married Elizabeth Cox. Not Elizabeth Lally. I think you may have the wrong family with this particular Philip and Elizabeth.
