Greetings from Napa, California. Looking for data on: Bernard Martin (Roman Catholic) B abt 1831, County Roscommon, not sure what Parish, immigrated to America 1834 (age 3 or 4), lived mostly in Pittston, Pennsylvania USA. Father's name might be Thomas, mother's might be Ann if named by Irish naming patterns.I'd love to know his place of origin and parents so I can trace his family.

He was married to Anna Padden Martin, B abt 1835, also Roman Catholic, probably in Mayo or Roscommon. My Irish DNA says northeast Mayo. I'd also love to trace her family origin. Not yet sure when she immigrated, they married in the USA.

These names are very common and without Parish information, it's hard to find from here. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, Linda Carrell

  • I found this record, could this be your Ann Padden https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:27P5-3SV . This Ann Padden travelled in a family group in 1851, remember this was at the time of the famine in Ireland (1845-1849) . Her date of birth is 1836, the name Padden is as you say associated with Co.Mayo .

  • Linda:

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a October 3 1831 baptismal record for a Bernard Martin with father John Martin and mother Margaret Murry. The RC parish was Elphin. Probably half of the RC parishes in Co. Roscommon do not have records back to 1831 so it is possible that your Bernard was baptized in a parish that no longer has records back to 1831.

Roots Ireland also has a baptismal record for an Ann Padden on July 20 1832 in the Kilmoremoy (Ballina) RC parish. Father was Michael Padden and the mother Ann McShee (as transcribed). They lived on Patrick St. in Ballina. Co. Mayo has the same issue with many RC parishes having records starting later than the 1830s.

By the way, when you look at the Griffiths data for Mayo, the surname Padden was almost exclusively found in the very west of Mayo in Kilmore and Kilcommon civil parishes.

Have you considered a DNA test? You may get matches that have more information on your Martin and Padden lines.

  • https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MGDW-8XJ 1910 Census showing an Anna Martin, widowed. Do you know what Bernard's occupation was, I notice this is a coal mining area.
