I am researching my husband's family which is proving rather difficult on his Father's side.  His Great Grandfather Michael Peter Judge was born in 1858 in Ballymote he gives his Father's occupation as a Merchant, Shopkeeper and also a Grocer on documents.  His Father was also called Michael Judge I have no further information than this other than we think his Mothers name was Annie and she was born in 1837 I can only assume that Michael her husband would have been born around 1830's.

What we do know is that Michael Peter Judge moved to Dublin and evidently led a colourful life starting off as a Medical Student, then as a Civil Engineer, he later went into hotel management and caretaking he had three wives and died in London in 1936.

Does anyone have any information about the Judge family in Ballymote?   We know the name was originally Brehany who were the advisors to the Kings.  Perhaps you may know some Judge's in the area.  I do not have any pictures of Michael, but I do of one of his sons.  The Judge gene is quite strong as all the men have a similar look so I have attached some pictures.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The 1858 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Emlachfad civil parish (which includes Ballymote) shows a Michael Brehony in Market St. Ballymote. The only Judge was a Patrick Judge in the same location. See link.

I was unable to find a baptismal record for Michael under Judge or Breheny. I did find a Luke Joseph Judge in 1865 in the Ballymote RC records with parents Michael and Anne. Not sure if there is a connection. See below. Here is the parish register. Maybe you can review to look for Michael and other siblings. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0121

  • According to naturalization and immigration records, my grandfather, Thomas Judge, was born in 1882 and identified Ballymote as his birthplace.  He is not the Tom in your pictures.  His father may have been John Brehoney, his mother Annie Langan, both born in the 1850s.  He had 12 brothers and sisters.  Six of them are unidentified.  Thomas arrived on the S.S Carpathia in Boston on 14 May 1903.  He joined his brothers Matthew and John and sister Nellie.  He died in 1983.  I am not aware of a Luke, Michael or Peter.  Hope this helps. • Hi All,

Sorry I have not been back in touch, but I had to stop for a while.  I too found the birth of Luke Joseph Judge to Michael Judge and Anne Hannon and also his death in the same year and do think this may be the right couple. But still have not been able to find anything for Michael.  he was deinitely called Michael Judge and was a Grocer as his son Michael married 3 times, the second time was his first wife's sister (I think he was a bit of cad!), the third was after his second wife died and was 3 years before he died, he had 5 children with his 3rd wife and I guess could not divorce.  His Fathers name on all the marriage certifcates is Michael Judge - Grocer, Shopkeeper etc...  I have attached the marriage certificates.

I know a relation of our's went to Ballymote a long time ago and said that he found a book on the Judges in the library.  But I have done a lot of research online and cannot find anything.

It seems crazy as Michael Judge the grocer is my husbands Great Grandfather, yet I can find nothing on him or even the birth of his Grandfather.  Anything you are able to find would be great.  I shall also keep looking online and hopefully one day maybe make it over to Sligo.

Once again, thank you for your help.
