Hello, I am looking for any information about the Gorman family of Cloonshanballa, Culfadda. This is my father Robert Cecil Wood Gorman who was born at Cloonshanballa in 1914. He was the son of Henry Gorman and Eva Corry (of Dublin).  Henry Gorman was a farmer and the son of Robert Gorman and Agnes Pollexfen.  I would be particularly interested to know if Henry had any other children as I have been unable to trace any siblings of my father.  Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.com

  • Hello - sorry for the delay in answering.

I am not familiar with a Gorman family in Culfadda - altho when I return I will make inquires. I do know Gormley's who live in Carrickrathmullen Townland - north of Culfadda a mile or so.

Have you looked at the 1901 or 1911 Census of Ireland? To make sure the people you mention were in the area. The Census would let you know if Robert had older siblings.

I looked at the inventory of grave for Knockbrack Cemetery, which would be the nearest to Culfadda. I did not see any Gorman family members listed in the listing of gravestones [from a study of the graveyard done in 1996]

Let me know if you need directions to the Census.

  • Hello Steve, Thanks for your reply.  In fact we have just got back from a great trip to Ireland.  We found Cloonshanbally and had a lovely visit with Joe Hannon and his wife. Joe was born there, his father and two others bought the land from Henry Wood Gorman in the 1920s.  Joe is sure there are no family left in the area and my researches would back that up.  Henry is shown in the 1911 Census at Cloonshanbally as a single farmer.  He married in 1913 and my father was born at "Cloonshanballa" (as spelt on his birth certificate) in 1914.  Joe remembers that he was said to  "suffer from his nerves" and "wouldn't let his wife near him" - so maybe Robert was an only child!!  Henry moved to Dublin and is described as "retired" on Robert's school records, although he would only have been in his 30s.  Henry's mother Agnes was a Pollexfen, her sister Susan was W B Yeats' mother.  According to information on an exibition of  WBY's life a number of the Pollexfens including Agnes suffered from "mental breakdowns" so perhaps poor Henry inherited the wrong set of genes! Cloonshanbally is situated on right hand side of the Keash road out of Culfadda, sadly it is derelict except for the part occupied by the Hannons but can be clearly seen on Google Earth.

  • Hello Shiela,

My name is Gerry O'Daly, I'm from Keash, Co. Sligo. I believe you will be very interested in the attached links. I was reared in the townland of Carrowcrory, which is the next townland to Templevanny. I believe your relations once owned Templevanny House, This house is now derelict, it is now owned by Mr. Mark Dwyer of Templevanny, Ballymote, Co.Sligo. I hope this helps you in your research for your distant relations.
