We're a large clan with groups in Wisconsin, Boston, Chicago, Arizona, and throughout the U.S. My great-great grandparents were Attracta McDonagh and her husband John Cryan. He died working on a road and she brought her nine children to Boston in 1850 and then on to Wisconsin in 1856. We'd love any information we could get.

  • Hi Virginia,

You could try posting as much information regarding John and Attracta as you can. (i.e. dates of birth, place of birth etc...) The more information you post, the more likely it is that someone will be able to make a link for you.

Church records may also be of use to you. Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/. Some catholic registers are held by the National Library of Ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx others are held locally. If you know the area from which your relatives came, it might be worthwhile to contact the local parish offices for further assistance. You can view mass times and contacts here: http://www.catholicireland.net/mass-times?task=churchbycounty&county=Co.%20Sligo

I wish you the best of luck with your search.

    Kind regards,
