Hello, I'm researching my 2x great grandmother's family. Her name is Susan Jane Mossop, b. 12 Dec 1839. She married William Henry McComb(s) (1838-1911) on in 15 Dec 1862 in the Corbally Parish Church, County Tipperary. They had one daughter, Annie Elizabeth, b. 9 Oct 1863, prior to leaving for America in Sept 1864. Susan's death certificate says her parents were Jonathan Mossop and Helen Martin, both born in Ireland. I am not able to find records for them in Roscrea or Corbally. I have found two people who may be Susan's parents in Borrisokane. My theory is that Susan might have been born and reared in Borrisokane. I find a Jonathan Mossop and an Ellen Mossop living in Borrisokane on the Griffiths valuation records for 1852: Jonathan Mossop in Liskinlahan, place type "townland" and Ellen Mossop in Rathmore/Tower Hill, place type 'other'. I'm looking for information on these people, especially birth/baptism information for Annie Elizabeth McCombs. Can anyone help? Thank you!  Liz.....I can be reached at this email: lizparks47@hotmail.com.  (Originally posted Oct/Nov 2022)

Update 6 Jan 2023

Based on sage advice I'm adding a few terms, names and places, that relate to my Mossop ancestors:  Roscrea - McComb(s) - Cottan Lane; John Carroll, Ivy Hills, Corbally who was a Soldier and father to Jane Carroll McComb.

Thanks so much!

Liz

  • Liz, I saw some family trees on Ancestry linked to census records that say Annie McCombs was bon in New York.

  • Liz,

This is maybe a bit of a stretch, but here goes...the 1870 US Census shows the family in Chester, Warren County, NY; and Annie Elizabeth is listed as Lizzie. It says she was born in Ireland (the ditto marks from her parents above).

The only birth I found on rootsireland.ie that is close is for an Elizabeth McCoomb born 19 Feb 1864 in Roscrea Church of Ireland parish. Baptism on 25 Feb 1864. The only problem is that her parents are given as John McCoomb and Catherine McCoomb. John's occupation is sub constable of police. Maybe a relative to William? Baptism records for Roscrea COI began in 1792 and in 1810 for RC records, so not sure why hers is missing.  Is it possible that they adopted her? Lizzie is not shown ten years later in the 1880 US Census with the family.

  • Thank you Patricia for responding.

Some of the records I've located do show her born in New York. In reviewing all the records and information I have referenced, and in analyzing who provided the information, I feel confident that the New York birth information is incorrect. Lizzie (Annie Elizabeth) was my great grandmother. I lived next door to my grandmother (her daughter) for 23 years and joyfully had grandma in my live for over 30 years. She told me her mother was in fact born in Ireland. My grandmother also had her grandmother (Lizzie's mom) living near to and communicating with her through postcards and letters and visits. Grandma's grandma, Susan Mossop McCombs lived in Michigan until 1914, when my granndmother was 25 years old. And I believe I've found the passenger/customs list for the immigration of Susan and Annie Elizabeth in 1864.

Thanks again for your thoughts on this.
