I'm researching my maternal great grandmother and am interested in information about Thomas Quane (wife, Mary Walsh) and family, whose daughter using the name Mary Quann married a Private James Swetenham Heaton in 1870 in Clonmel, and moved to Morar Gwalior and Kasauli, India where she had several children.  After leaving the military they then moved to Lancashire, UK.

    Welcome to ireland Reaching Out!

There is a Thomas Quane/Quain family in the St. Peter and Pauls RC church in Clonmel with six children including an 1848 Maria. however, the mother's surname is Lawless. The other children were Catherine, Felix, William, Maurice and Patrick in addition to Maria. Is this a different family?

  • I still don't know.  I just received the marrriage certificate and it says that Mary's father Thomas was a Boatman.  Nothing on her mother.

  • Hi Kristina

I too have connections with this family. Thomas Quane married Mary Walsh 1830 in Emily, Co Tipperary. Reference through Bridget (married John O'Brien) shows the 8 children of Thomas & Mary have either Quane or Quade as their surname: Bridget Quade,  Michael Quade, Thomas Quane, William Quade, Margaret Quade, Mary Quane, Johanna Quade & John Quane.

I also found reference to a Thomas Quane having been sentenced to 9 months hard labour I think for riot and assault being released after five months on 19 Sept 1836.

I believe my link, Margaret married James Casey in Melbourne in 1866 with the surname spelt Qeuaid. I've not yet found when, why or with whom she emigrated.

I hope this gives you a lead.

  • Hi MC Turnbull:  I don't know whether this is the same family or not.  My ancestor spelled her name Quan on her marriage certificate, although her father signed as as Quane.  I've not been researching for a whilebecause of complications moving house but plan on getting back to this at the end of the year.  I  hope to keep in touch and see if I can find out more.  best,  Kristina

  • I just stumbled upon my connection to the Quane (Sp?) family.  My grandmother Alice Helps (born in Lambeth, London) was the granddaughter of Mary Eileen Heaton m. to James Swetenham Heaton.

I actually found the connection when casually looking into David Bowie (real name Jones) family tree.  It says our mutual ancestor Mary Walsh married a "William Quane" but your information seems to confirm it was Thomas.  Has anyone gotten beyond Mary and Thomas?

    Thank you

  • Hi Melissa:

I've not been researching for the last year or so, too distressed at David's untimely death.  But am very interested in who Alice Phelps' parents were.  Which one was the Heaton??  I got the name Thomas Quane because that's how he signed the Heaton marriage certificate but if Mr Turnbull reply  is correct he had a son William.  Best Kristina

  • Hi Kristina:

Alice's mother was the Heaton. Her father was Phelps/Helps (there's always been confusion in the family about the spelling). I will talk to my dad this weekend and see if he has more info on Alice's parents.  My dad is still in London and I am in Washington, DC. I think my dad has Alice's brith certificate.

I'll share anything my dad can remember!

    Best,

    Melissa
