www.rootsireland.ie/ has these sisters from Tipperary. Birth years were often inaccurate. Do you know if they were Protestant?

  • The information that I have in the Tasmania, Australia, Immigrant Lists, 1841-1884 they arrived under the Indenture System. They were Roman Catholic Bridget was 19 Ellen was 26. Bridget could read, Ellen could neither read nor write. They were both general house servants.Their bounty was 12/- and 6/- had been paid.

I know a lot about what happened to them in Tasmania but nothing about their life in Tipperary.

  • Thank you Col it would’ve so great if it was them..unfortunately I can find no way of confirming that it is them. Do you know if Ireland would have any records on their immigration to Australia?

I hope that being on Irelandxo that there is a relative living there that knows something.

    Thanks once again Glenda

  • Frustrating for you Glenda!

I am not permitted to post the details of people on the site but if you google www.118.ie/ you'll get an irish phone book.

Select People Search and enter MorrissEy and Tipperary as the location and you'll get 15 results; I suggest you drop them a line as it often gets results.

Irish Emigration records seem more available at port of arrival than departure I'm afraid!

  • Hi Glenda and Col,.

I have Morrissey roots in South Tipperary, and would like to help you find your Morrissey.s.

Morrissey spelled sometimes with one s, and with no e, before the y.

Its a scarce name,  The best records are at the port of destination. is that where you found they were from Templemore

Did the two sisters marry and have children, The names of their second son  and daughter should give you the christian name of their parents using the Irish naming pattern.

Templemore Catholic Church records for Marriage and Baptism,s started in 1809.

Best of luck, let me know if you need any more help.

    Christina.

  • Hi Christina, thank you for responding to my post.

All I know is that Bridget and Ellen came from Tipperary County.  Bridget was 19 & Ellen was 26 on arrival in Hobart by their Immigrtation papers They were Irish brides and arrived onboard Kingston in 1854. They departed Southampton on 26 May, 1854.

There are no records of where they came from here in Australia.

Bridget had 4 children which I can't find births for but through marriage certificates and the Catholic Archdioces of Hobart Bridget married a James McKenna

Hannah 1858, Alice 1858 (Twins) James Edward 1859, Ann 1861.

Ellen had 2 children  - Ellen married John Walsh John was 35 when they married in 1855 I would say thats why only 2 children.

Female 1856 no name died in 1857.

    Son Patrick Walsh 1861.

    Alice married Alexander Wilson Stock

2 children Amy Agnes 1881, Francis James Stock 1883.

Alexander Wilson Stock's father was Francis Stock and mother was Agnes Wilson

    Hannah married a Joseph Johnson

4 children Alice Elizabeth 1882, James McKenna 1890, Alfred Francis 1894, Joseph Alex Milford 1899.

I hope this may help you find them.  As suggested by Col I have done letters to all the Morrissey's in Tipperary, Tipperary phone book which I will post tomorrow in the hopes of maybe finding a connection.

Any help would be most appreciatedChristina.

  • Hi Glenda,  Hopefully the letters you posted to Morrisseys in Tipperary as suggestd by Col, will yield results.

Over Christmas I will look up Morrisseys in Tipp on Griffiths Valuation enumerated 1850s. using various spellings for Morrissey.

www.askaboutireland.ie   My Morrissey relatives did not come to Tipp until 1860.

If Bridget and Ellen came to Tasmania as Irish brides it is possible they came with a group,

I will try and find out is their any material on them here in Ireland.

The childrens names are scarce which will be a help.  Have you found any headstones there in Tasmania,

I know there is a lot of material being put on line at the moment on emigrants from the UK and Ireland early 1800s  to Australia Tasmania and Norfolk Island.

Have you done a DNA  test, it is amazing and shows up lots of relatives.

Have a great Christmas , and I will get back to you.

    Christina.

  • Hi Christina nice to hear from you. Hope  you had a great Christmas and New Year.

Sorry to say I haven’t heard anything yet from any of the Morrissy’s I sent letters to...am still hoping though.

Guess you haven’t managed to find out anything either.

  • Hi again Glenda, I lloked up the Morrisseys in Tipperary North in Griffiths valuation 1850s.

Two  spelled Morrisey, 66 spelled  Morrissy, None spelled Morosy, none spelled Morissy.

I did come across a baptism in the parish of Annacarty/Donohill for  a John Morrissey born to John

    and Alice English in 1804.

The name Alice, perhaps could be a clue as there was an Alice in your ancestry.

You do not say if you have DNA test done.

Templemore where Col found baptism, is in the diocese of Cashel and Emly, where

Tipperary Family History Research, will look up material for you, For 30 euro.

    Their email  research@tfhr.org

Let me know how you get on and  hopefully we will find your relatives.

  • Hi Christina, great to hear from you. I’m really pleased to say I have received 3 responses to my letters in the last 2 days via email.

One of the responses is from a Michael Morrissey who is being very helpful in trying to find my Bridget and Ellen. I’m pretty sure he’s a family history buff as well.

Yes I have had a DNA done but unfortunately my DNA relationship to Bridget doesn’t come through to me because Bridget was my fathers Great Grandmother.

I have checked my results and funny enough there are 2 Morrissey names in the results as 6-8 cousins. I will have to investigate further.

I have contacted my fathers sister’s grand daughter she is a direct line DNA wise so she is checking to see if there are any matches which may lead us down the right path. Fingers crossed.

Michael has sent me all the Parish Records for Tipperary, which I am slowly but surely making my way through.

Will let you know if I have any luck. Thank you once again for all your help.
